Ruger MkIII w/ optics
« on: July 13, 2009, 03:42:29 PM »
I've had a MkIII SS Hunter for a couple of years and have loved this pistol.  Last week I put a Pentax red dot on it and WOW, do I like it better now!!  I have 20/15 eyesight, but the red dot is just so much easier and faster on target.  No more lining up the front and rear sights.....just put the dot on it and squeeze it off.  Very easy to sight in, too, only took 6 rounds total at 25 meters.

Lester, I tried contenders with pistol scopes but gave up just never could get the hang of shooting a handgun with glass on it. But my eyesight is getting so bad I need some help. Maybe I'll try a red dot. I have a EOTech on my AR and like it.

My MK III Hunter still has iron sights on it, but my MK II 678GC has an Ultradot LT holographic sight on it. It is a lot of fun. Nice and compact, accurate as many rifles. Great fun for long range plinking.

UtahRob -

That Hunter looks awesome wearing the Fastfire!  As much as I like the Pentax, it is pretty bulky.  Thanks for sharing that picture, I may just have to go shopping now!

I too have tried scopes on several handguns and although I did get remarkable accuracy they just didn't seem like handguns anymore, heavy, bulky and awkward to carry and quick point shooting was out of the question. Conventional red dots seemed to share all of those negatives plus they had to be turned on and adjusted.
I too have come to love the "tubeless red dots". They weigh next to nothing, are little bulkier than adjustable iron sights, have unlimited eye relief and field of view, provide a sharp, single aiming point with nothing to turn on and off and the gun still handles like an iron sight handgun. If the sight is mounted over the original rear sight location it will still fit many standard holsters perhaps with just a bit of leather trimmed away.
Here is my AMT Automag II with a Burris Fastfire.
The story of David & Goliath only demonstrates the superiority of ballistic projectiles over hand weapons, poor old Goliath never had a chance.
