Getting started warning Puma Lever Gun

I just made a grievous error!!

I went to a CAS match and got hooked, so of course new gun purchases must be made.

I bought a Puma lever gun in .357mag (while out of town on business). At the store, I asked the sales clerk to double check that the rifle held ten rounds. He disappeared behind into the back room and came back a minute later, said he checked the manual and said "Yep, it holds 10 rounds". So I bought it.

Brought the gun back to my hotel and went for dinner. When I got back, I carefully started to load the rifle (didn't want the Edmonton police swat team busting down my door). 1 through 6 went in pretty slick, 7 and 8 were a bit tougher, number 9 was a no go. I looked at the manual, the specs listed 10 round capacity for .357 in the 20" rifle, I bought the 16" OOPS OOPS OOPS OOPS I should have done the math (1.59" COAL X 10 = 15.9").

A mere hours old and never fired, the store would not, I repeat NOT give me a refund for the rifle.


If you are buying a Lever Gun for CAS, don't buy a sixteen inch

Ouch! Sounds like the salesman is a shmuck! and maybe a liar!

I don't blame the salesman, it seems like an honest mistake on his part.
The store owner on the other hand was very brusque with me, she did eventually did give me a store credit for the full price.
I used it to by a new coach gun, some new unprimed brass (.45Colt) and a commander style hammer for my 1911.

Problem i have with salespeople(any of them) is that they don't know the merchandise! If I didn't know my job , when I DID IT, people could die. Most don't have a clue, you have to coach them through a sale. If you dont know what is going on they cant and usually wont help you! Just a pet peeve of mine!

Glad things worked out and you got credit. 

I bought a 24" barrel Rossi (EMF)  it said 10 rounds...funny thing the shorter 20" barrel said 10 rounds as well.  So I took the mag tube cap off and low and behold, an great big plastic plug in there to keep the rounds at 10...(maybe so they could ship to California?)  Well...12 goes in good now...I have heard 13 will, but I don't want to compress the spring all that much and 12 is plenty.  (45 Colt caliber)

So FYI...on the 24" Rossi's from either EMF or Legacy Sports Puma's....if they are 24" barrels and your only getting 10 in there, check for that plug.

All you would have had to do is take and unscrew the extra plug in the magazine tube. Some of the Puma guns had an extra long plug screwed in the regular one.

Hey Merkelerk--are you putting that Trapper up for sale?  I know of some guys looking for one of those.  The 357 Trappers are pretty highly thought of by some posters on this an other websites.  I've got one of these myself, but don't do cowboy shooting.  They are a great truck gun and are a handy little piece to keep behind the farmhouse door.

I need to clarify in case someone needs to know, tube feed rifles are exempt from the 10 round limit in California.
