Before I make another mistake....
« on: July 13, 2009, 04:53:31 PM »
I need a second SAA for my CAS setup.
I have and old model Vaquero 4.75 inch in .45Colt. truly a wonderful gun.....

Is it going to make a big difference in my times if I go to an Italian clone, I am having a hard time finding a second Vaq old model.

Does anybody use two different guns?

I'm ambidexterous, so I though "Gunslinger" might be my style, maybe the right hand won't care what the left hand is holding.

The old style Vaquero is larger than a SAA clone, but a lot of people mix and match.  If you are like me you will eventually want to switch to 357.  Since you are already looking at a 357 rifle, why not buy a clone in 357 and another later when you can fit it into your budget.  In the meantime you will be using two different calibers, but you won't be handicapped too much.

Thanks, that is what I was thinking but I was unsure how it would affect my time.

If you are getting started I would suggest you not worry much about speed. From what i have seen in the beginning accurate and smooth are far more important than speed.  Of course, after a little experience you will probably become more and more interested in dropping your times.

I started earlier this year.  My first match I was dead last.  I have been improving each month, and am now about twice as fast as when I started. I am not last anymore, but it will be a while before I find myself in the middle of the pack. I am still about half as fast as the really good shooters.  It recently dawned on me that they have been practicing for years.   I suspect you will find a way to buy that second SAA just about the time you start thinking that you can be competitive.

Right now I am focused on shooting clean and smooth.   If I can do that by the end of the year, I will be happy.

Your comments don't surprise me at all.

When I was less prone to catastrophic injury (younger) I raced motorcycles, mainly 250GP and light weight super sports.
You didn't get fast until you learned to be smooth and most of all consistent, once you could do lap after lap exactly the same way each go round, the speed would start to come all on its own.

Cowboy action shooting is a race, and I assume the same applies.

I starte out with a blackhawk in .357,and a clone in 45colt.
I would not do that again if I had a choice, big difference in weight and balance .
Actually,I would do it again if it meant shoot or don't go shooting.
I"m far from being a 'competitor' in the game, cannot afford the quality guns and practice ammo, but I still have fun shooting the steel,I LOVE that clang!

have you tried putting a WTB post on the SASS callsifieds, and other gun boards like the High Road?

I have put up a post on Canadian Gunutz, the others you mention are U.S. sites and importing into Canada can be very difficult.

good advise to live by right here , yes its a race for time at the matches but you cant think your goin to  be in the top 5 the first times out, ive done it for years and granted i have  gottin better and even got third in a match  ,,(only 20 where there that  day , rainin an crappy and i shot good haha)  ichances are it will take a while for ya to get in the right equipment to  get to the top, i switch  guns and play with loads to much iam told but i like to do it , it probobly does  hold me back but i win just as much money as the top 5 do in a match hahaha just have fun with it and enjoy it the times will come along

You could also decide to have fun and shoot CAS like it was really done. By that I mean with black powder!! COME OVER TO THE DARK SIDE. You can decide to have fun and try all the different classes. Don't make the mistake of becoming a gamer or having to buy gamer guns and equipment. If you want to be a gamer that is fine also. I'm just saying that you can have a lot of fun shooting CAS and not coming in first. You don't need that 73 with that short stroke kit. Find me one of those that was used by a real cowboy.

I am leaning towards the more authentic (not many .357 mags available in 1879).
Started loading my colt brass with THE EVIL BLACK STUFF and I think I have created a new addiction to add to my already long list of vices.

Back in my motorcycle road racing days, I couldn't afford the latest and fastest equipment (minimum $80,000) to race all season and finish in the top 3. I learned to be fast and consistent on the equipment I had or made in my own shop. It was enough to be out on the track, going fast, and being passed by national champions like I was standing still.

I love to shoot, I will pull the trigger on anything I can. Even an afternoon with an old single shot .22 will make me smile. So I may not be the fastest, I rarely was when I was racing bikes, I can still have a great time.

That said...... I am looking at a Chapparal Arms SAA clone that I can buy new for $379.00 and a slightly used Puma lever gun for $400 (includes  brass and dies).

If you like your OMV, you'd do best if you could get another OMV and set the two guns up as close to the same as you can.  Your times will suffer if you have continuously adjust to different pistols.  I've talked to several pards that shoot different pistols in CAS matches; to a man they admit that it makes things much harder.  But they like the style points.

OMVs are out there, on gunbroker.com, auctionarms.com, or sassnet.com/forums/index.php?showforum=14.  It took me longer than six months to acquire my two Roooger OMV Bisleys in SS, 5 1/2 barrels.  They were worth the time and trouble; I'm extremely happy with them!
