****WHATS WRONG WITH THIS PICTURE?****
« on: July 14, 2009, 03:42:23 AM »
I know this is in the wrong Forum but I think it may get better insight in this one.
Tim, move this to the T/C Forum if you think it would be better ....
I just had our two Labradors go nuts in the yard. They were barking and chasing a Fisher, and up a dead spruce tree it went. The darn thing stopped about 25' up the tree at the edge of the back yard.  We have about 15 acres surrounded by a 300 acre land trust.  A ridge rises about 85'-100' above the back yard.
On the way out the door I grabbed my T/C Encore .460 S&W carbine.  With a .45 Colt Speer 250gr. GoldDot HP in the chamber I took a shot at the Fisher.  The shot did not hit the Fisher, but I had not used this ammo in the Encore.... I kept thinking how could I miss? ??? ???  The shot was about 100' away.  I know that the factory .45 Colt is loaded to less than 14K psi. but why this?
What do you think?

That is not good. I wonder if for some reason there was bad powder or a bad primer. Other than that I don't know what. I guess I am not much help.

I think the chamber is so long in the .460 that it does not have enough PSI. to seal the case to the chamber.
The 30,000 Cup loads, large Ruger and Handi safe work just fine.  This was the first  standard pressure .45 Colt that I have used.... And The Last Time Also!!!!

That is a good point and something I never thought of. If that is going to happen I wouldn't use them any more either. I would be afraid of messing up the gun some how.

Isn't the bullet diameter of the .460 S&W smaller than the .45 Colt by about .004"?
Just asking...

EDIT: Bad info source, DOH. back to my seat in the corner

460 and 45 colt both use .452" bullets, I think a bad primer, short or contaminated charge is to blame.

Thanks Tim,   What to do now?   On one hand I would like  to push the bullet out and take a look.  Then measure the bullet etc....  On the other hand, T/C told me to send the barrel to them but I think the barrel is OK.
The gas went out by the extractor and I did not feel a thing.  I sure am glad I did not press the trigger on another round. :o

If it was the first round thru it, I'd be concerned, but if you'd shot it before and it worked fine, I'd just soak in Kroil and knock it on out with a 3/8" dowel.  ;)

I just took the barrel off the frame.  Aimed the barrel at the sun looking through the chamber end and can see just a little bit of day light. Like looking at an eclips of the sun.

I am off to do a bullet-ectomy.

Thanks, Eddie

PS. This barrel has had about 20 .460's and 25 .45 Colt +P+ fired through it....

That sounds like maybe the bullet was undersize,  it didn't seal the bore completely allowing the gas to pass around it!!  :-\

After soaking the bore with break free CLP the bullet came out with a few light taps. ;D
The chamber had a scorch mark just like the nickel plated case in the PIC.  That cleaned up easy.
The last inch or two out by the muzzle has quite a bit of copper and will need a heavy dose of copper remover.  I have Butch's Bore Shine and will give that a try.

The bullet had stopped at the cannelure and that may have helped let the light in the barrel.
The bullet lands measure .4425-- .443 and the groves are .452

Glad it was an easy removal, I'd slug the bore at the muzzle and see how it compares.  ;)

Thanks Tim,  The muzzle seems to be .443 and .452 but it may be the way I am holding the dial caliper.....This is the same numbers as the GoldDot that I removed.
I do not recomend slugging the bore like I did. :o ;D

The last 3/8" of the bore at the muzzle still has copper on the lands.  This is where the bullet rested as the hot gas bled off.  If I look real close the machine marks can be seen on the lands.  They look like the edge of a "dime"  but not as rough.
This copper may need an overnight soaking to get all of it.

I'm with Joe, including "Tall Coyotes" if they give me trouble.  And yes, we have Pine Martens and Fishers here too.  All the weasels are nasty.  A little weasel, weighing less than a pound, kills a chicken easily.  Not to mention what they do on grouse.
