What is your "Short Range" Handi Rifle top choice for Predators / Varmints under 100 yards?   Like a Farm yard, back yard etc...If you had to pick a caliber to dispatch a coyote to rat, raccoon. If I have left out your caliber let me know.

I'd choose a 17hmr due to the ricochet potential being less, also not as noisy.  ;)

Hi Tim,  can you add .17 HMR  to the poll?    The program will not let me go back in to do it.

Thanks, Eddie

PS.   Good choice

Never mind............. :P

i voted...since you said less than 100 yards the answer is 357 magnum hands down for anything smaller than varmint black bears....mine has a wood stock with no recoil pad,H+R plastic buttplate, can't even feel it..when i really bear down at the bench at 50 yds my group is a 3 shot hole, sometimes i can cover the group with a dime. Accurate,no recoil, and cheap to shoot if you reload....

I chose the .357 max/mag based on the "out the back door" concept and not fur hunting.  It's kinda like a grownups .22 short, long, long rifle with .38s, mags and maxs replacing the .22s.  My Max has a stock cartridge holder with three Maxs, three mags and 3 .38s.  Take your pick to suit the situation.  Out the back door here can be all of 300 yards or better.

The .243 has been added to the poll.

Also I think the .45-120 will get one vote. :P

Edit:  You may change your vote if new calibers are added.

This is exactly how I use my Handi Hornet. Cleaning up squirrels and coyotes out to 150 yards. A great choice. It is easy (and very cheap) to load, relatively quiet and no ricochet with the 40 VMax. Ricochet is big deal here in the foothills. This stuff we call "dirt" is really decomposed granite. Lead will bounce off at any angle other than 90 degrees. My reasons for the Hornet are really the same as Tim's reasons for the 17 HMR except that loading for the Hornet might be a little cheaper than buying HMR ammo - but not much.

I voted for the 357 Max for the reasons Pete gave, but the Hornet is probably the best choice.  The 17 might be a bit light at 100 yd for a yodle dog or a big boar coon.  22 Mag might get'er done also.  DP

Most all are good calibers with my nod going to the 223.
I would also like to add the 204 to the list.

I picked the 12 ga shotgun. I have done extensive night hunting for coyote and fox and the 12 wins hands down AT NIGHT.

Had you said varmit i would have said 223, "predator / varmit" has gotta be 243 for me. My preference for under 100 yards is the 44 mag but i dont have that in a handi............yet!

I have a 357 Max and it sets at my back door for this very purpose. I have 22 Hornets, 221 Fireballs, 223s, 44 mag, 17 HMR. A 221 Fireball used to set at the back door for this kind of thing, but the 357 max has unseated it.

I most generally use my >22 hornet for this purpose here on the farm(how i voted)prefer it over my .223 because I have about 400 rds. for the hornet and a thousand primers ,500boolits, and some LILGun, would use me .45 Classic but don't want to get it beat up in the rush when ole Wiley crosses the threshold..  ;)

I have the Hornet set up for this very purpose.  VERY cheap easy to carry 50 rounds with you.  20 just in the neoprene shell holders.  2 per slot.

I cant vote from my phone I guess.

For the same reasons that Tim and Spooked picked
I also add 22 Mag.
with the ballistic tips they bullets have little zing factor around rocks and you can carry a whole box in your pocket easy.
And the 22 mag has a little more punch than the 17 around 50 yards.
Other than that I would look at either the 22 hornet or the 17HMR.

I said .22 Hornet.  I blew a fox in half with my .17HMR at five yards, scattered fox for yards behind it.  Don't believe a .22 Hornet would have been that messy.

Dang sourdough when I was thinking under 100 I kinda had 50 to 95 in mind . Who knew you was gonna chase him down and stick it in his rectum! a .22 would have been sufficient!  ;)

LOL.
this is going to be the longest poll in history if you keep adding a caliber for everyones response.
the list will look like a ammo catalog rather than what are viable options you are looking to go to.

What I had in mind are four legged carnivores 100 lbs. and under that might make a snack out of farm animals, dogs and cats.  Or injure one of your animals resulting in an expensive trip to the Vet.
What is your "Short Range" Handi Rifle top choice for Predators / Varmints under 100 yards?   Like a Farm yard, back yard etc...If you had to pick a caliber to dispatch a coyote to rat, raccoon. Fox, Fisher, Porcupine, Badger, Extra Large Coyote.
