Good Scope Choice for Wolf
« on: July 15, 2009, 03:08:22 PM »
Got me a new Wolf for my first try at muzzleloader hunting.  I'm now looking for a good scope match.

My shots would be mostly 25-100 yards, with a 125 yard absolute max.

I'm looking at the Nikon ProStaff 2-7x32 Shotgun Hunter.  Good choice?

Thanks,

Chopper

Should be a great choice.  I'm using a similar scope by Simmons and it works well.  I've shot targets to 200 yds. with good success.

Yes, should be good. I just ordered a couple of Leatherwood scopes for 2 mz's I will be taking to NM this fall.

I put a Nikon Omega Slughunter 1.5-5x36 on my Wolf. It has 5" of eye relief, wide angle field of view UNLIKE their 42mm model, it is very sharp and bright, and it allows me to aim and shoot with both eyes open, even at 5x. I thought that spending $240 would be too much, but this was absolutely a good purchase. One would think that a $240 scope on a $150 gun does not make sense. After you shoot your Wolf you will understand. Mine likes 250 grain bullets and 80 gr of 777 powder. No point trying to burn more powder in that short barrel. A 250 grain bullet with 80 grains of powder behind will kill anything anyway.

I still have not fired my new Wolf as I am still waiting to find some BH209.  Which 250 grain bullet do you hunt with?  I am starting to question hunting with powerbelts.

I use the 250 gr. Hornady SST and black sabots. Have not shot a deer with them yet.
I never fired the BH 209 powder, but i used 80 grains of 777 FFg and Nobel Sport primers. This may be the maximum that you can burn in that short barrel. I see no problem whatsoever in keeping the bullets in less than 2" at 100 yards. Cleaning with one wet patch (usually tobacco spit) and one dry patch between shots. Loading a second bullet without cleaning is no problem.
