Magnum primers

Who (Tim, CW,)   ;D  can tell me what if any effect will magnum rifle primers have on non magnum loads.

I can get my hands on some magnum lg rifle primers do I wanna?

I have used magnum primers in the past in the .270 with H4831 with good results following the standard load developement rules.

I'M GETTING DESPERATE, I may try some and see, wondering about smaller cases like 243 and 35 remington also?

 ;)Oldshooter, I have used mag primers in my .25-06 and .30-06 to develop loads with slower burning powders. Infact, neither would shoot well with std. primers, but when I switched  to mag.s the groups were great. I think they would be fine, certainly mag. primers are better than no primers at all. :D ;) :)

I definitely wouldn't just switch to mag primers in an existing load, but I would work the load up from start data using them as Siskiyou stated.  ;)

I've been loading magnums recently, (all I could get), in 243 and 45-70.  I started over at min. load data and built up a few.  Actually, I'm not far off the load I was using, and am saving just a few grains of powder.  The biggest difference was in the 243.  Very little in the 45-70.  I've even used them for "black powder" loads, (I'm using Blackhorn) with no problems.

Prior to finding these I've been using large pistol primers.  I've found you can't load hot at all with them, but with moderate loads I see no problems.

I've loaded CCI 250 large rifle magnum primers in 44 Mag., 357 Herrett and other larger cartridges.  At least in cartridges of 308 Winchester & bigger, I have not had to make any load adjustments in going from large rifle to large rifle magnum primers.  In the 44 Mag., I had to decrease my load of H110/Win. 296 by 1.5 to 2 grains.

I have been testing Blackhorn 209 powder in my Black Powder Rifles and if don't use Magnum Primers, will delay fire.

I have seen a couple of info sites that have limited testing info on the difference between all models of primers.

Here is one such website

Based on the info I have seen so far just back off the powder 15% and work up a load just as you would with any cartridge.
There is not that much of an increase of power with mag primers.

Well this is some good news! I was begining to get withdrawal symtoms. I'm gonna try some and see what i can work up to.

I've used magnum primers in my 243 with no problems.Actually, it seemed to help light off that near max load of H4831 just a little better. When i was loading 25/06, that's all I used.
Like others have been saying, don't start at the top of the chart and work up slowly.

I've loaded CCI 250 large rifle magnum primers in everything I reload from 22-250 to 300HH with no problems but as always with caution
