The meeting was set for 7:00AM sharp.
Both parties arrived at the appointed location, each ready to see just who would be able to walk away.
The "E"s had been flying back and forth for an overly long time, and it was time to settle the question once and for all. No holds barred, a match to the finish. One and only one winner!
Well the breakfast went about like you'd expect in a country cafe in Ideeeeeeeho, two over easy with bacon, hashbrowns, toast and coffee, lots of coffee.
About 8am with as yet no clear winners, we headed for Vassar Meadow Road, each itch'in for the feel of cold steel and wood, seasoned with the smell of burning powder and bullet lube.
The result ------------------------------------------
Well, still no clear winner. Both subjects able to walk away, still under their own power.
I figured it was go'in to be a cake walk with yours truely quickly and easyly taking high honors and bragg'in rights to spread far and wide over the net.
It wasn't to be.
Not that I had to leave the shoot'in grounds with my tail between my legs, but sure enough I didn't walk away with any valuable prises like the other guy's rifle for example.
Conditions were about as good as I have shot in for quite some time. A bit of early morn'in cool still hang'in on and the slight whisper of a breeze when there was any at all.
We set up the bench, ranged the target board at 50 yards, and the lead began to fly.
A "parts bin gun", you know one of those Salvages, a Mark I FVT, single shot mounted with a 4X Nikon, against my Clark Custom 77/22 complete with a Leupold 3X9 EFR.
I had put in a stash of pricey .22 target ammo some time back just for such an occasion, so now was the time to haul out the Lapua - Master (L & M), Midas (again both L & M), Eley Tenex EPS, Rem. Eley Match EPS, Winchester Surpreme, Wolf Match Target, Wolf Match Extra among others.
Let the best man/rifle win and let me tell you, Ol'Jack had me worried right from the start.
That Salvage, Oooops, sorry Jack - Savage had a streak go'in that didn't want to quite.
The CRuger didn't let me down, but I sure didn't have easy pick'ins!
Both rifles shot 5 shot groups from just over a quarter inch to half inch with ammo they liked, down to 13/16" (Savage) and 15/16" (CRuger) with Winchesters T22.
1 1/16" for the Salvage (sorry, it just slipped out) and 1 5/8" - (4 in 7/16") - with the CRuger while shoot'in Winchester "Power Point".
All in all, we had a great time with a couple great shoot'in rifles, but one which left no clear winner in the on go'in saga.
Looks like we need to set another dawn meet'in, Salvage against CRuger, no holds barred, but mean while I still have plenty of "E" fodder, as Jack in not only the owner of that good shoot'in Salvage, but also happens to own a nice model 41 B&C (stands for Bean Can gun).
You know, one of those guns made by the fruit and vegtable cann'in people, S&W.
Better get to practic'in Jacko, I'm still after that Salvage to add to my collection.
keep em com'in
