Williams Fool-Proof FP Receiver Peep Sights for a Win. 95
« on: July 16, 2009, 01:26:47 PM »
I am new to GBO, and have a question about just which Williams Fool-Proof FP series receiver peep sight might best fit a new Miroku USRAC BACO Winchester model 1895 SRC, with the two already drilled and tapped holes on the left side of the receiver?  First, I already got a Lyman 66WB, which only Buffalo Arms website read that it would fit both 1886 and 1895; the fact that Lyman wesite made no such claim should have been a flag.

Well, my 95 receiver is wider than any 86 receiver, so the knurled windage knob would bottom-out or rest upon the bolt at lower elevations.  So, I look to Williams, aluminum metal and all, and their site indictes the FP-71 work on both Mod-71 .348 as well as newer 95s, and maybe even some Marlins, but only pictures that I have seen of the FP-71 clearly item shows two side-by-side top-of-receiver mounting screws, and my 95 already has the other side holes.  Then some websites or distributors say, don't depend upon the pictures.

I was wondering if a Williams receiver sight for Win 94 Big Bore, and big receiver, might work for the 95 as well.  I see the FP-94/375 and FP-94BBSE for the .375 and .307/.356 calibers repectively.  Has anyone at GBO installed a Williams FP or 5D on a Win 1895 with those side mounting holes?

I have poorer eyesight and receiver peep sights are my preference to mid-barrel open buckhorn or ladder sights.  I like the target knobs TK on Williams FP also.

Pick up the phone and call Williams.  They are great folks and will lead you gently to where you need to be.

Howdy,
With a perfect reproduction of the Lyman #21 Receiver sight now available for the 95, why are you trying to make a Williams or Lyman 66 work? Buffalo Arms stocks the Providence Tool Co version. I think I saw them for about $150.

Thanks all,

I too like the style of those Lyman 21 reproduction side-receiver peep sights on Providence Tool Co. of Wisconsin website, but I like their Peabody 1862 Patent rifles even better - someday.

The PTC no. 21 may require that I re-tap a front mounting screw hole, and drill and tap another new rear mounting screw hole, and then also remove or unscrew the saddle ring-stud, and then a Col. Townsend Whelen in his book The American Rifle, page 48, said that "The No. 21 sight usually seen on this rifle does not permit of sufficient delicacy of adjustment for elevation".  The Lyman # 38 might add windage adjustment, but those Russian-Ukrainian repro sights $250 have not been available from Buffalo Arms for some time, and would not change that elevation 'delicacy' thing.  Mainly, I was hoping to avoid the drilling of too many new and improved holes in the rifle.

I will give Williams Gunsights Company a call and see what they might be able to come up with.

Thanks again.
