rem mod 7 7mm-08 & Barnes tripeshocks for elk ??
« on: July 16, 2009, 04:57:15 PM »
My newest firearm is a sweet little model 7 in 7mm-08. Im Loving this rifle. Nice & light. Quick handling. Finally got to do some shooting. IMR 4350 & Hornady SST 139s seem to shoot real good. Now what Im wondering is if 140 grain Barnes tripleshocks at 2700 fps or so would be enough for elk. Ive got a 7mag that shoots 160 grain Nosler partitions great & a 35 whelen that Ive got some 225 Accubonds to load up. Both those would work great I know. But Im thinking that model 7 would be a joy to carry out west. Just wondering out loud. What are your thoughts
I dont care what gun Im using as long as Im hunting

"Would it be good enough for Elk?"  Yes, with some range limitations for energy & expansion. I would personally limit shots to 300-350 yards. Yes, it will kill Elk further than that, but for good energy transfer &
bullet expansion reasons that would be my personal limit. If you country is open I would carry the 7 mag for an additional 100 yds. I personally prefer a 300WM, but who cares, just an opinion. For the timber I would rather carry the Whelen, but in a nutshell, it will do the job.

I would choose a 150 grain Nosler Partition over the 140 grain Barnes triple shock bullets.  Also the 139 grain Hornady Interbond or 140 grain Nosler Accubond would be good for any Elk out of your Remington model 7 in 7mm-08 Remington.

I am not a fan of Barnes, since I witnessed a Barnes 100 grain X-Bullet fail to expand out of a 25-06 Remington at 50 yards on an Antelope.

If I were to choose from your rifles you listed, I would select your 35 Whelen with 225 grain Nosler Accubonds over your 7mm (Remington?) Mag and 7mm-08 Remington.

I had some of the old X bullets that did not expand, they fouled excessively & did not group.
However, in my guns at least, all 3 problems went away.

Yes, the old Barnes X-Bullets fouled badly, produced very high pressures, that’s why the rings are cut into them today.  I never used them; my friend tried them in his 25-06 Remington on an Antelope hunt and shot only coyotes with them after they failed to expand.

Well since I have excellent performance with Nosler and Hornady bullets, I will never try Barnes bullets; they are not worth my effort.  Plus I don’t have the need for lead free bullets; if I did the Nosler E-Tip would be my first choice.

I didn’t read the sticky, but if I ever find myself in Africa, I will have only Nosler bullets with me.

The TSX review in Africa is what got me thinking. I have considered the 140 Accubondss well. My shots would be limited to 300 yards or so. I just dont get to practice at those distances as much as I would like.
My brother & I were supossed to do a Colorado hunt this last year but having another baby shut that down. Maybe next year Thanksfor the input guys

I loaded my dad some " stout " 7-08 loads with 140 tsx's and he took them to NM and dropped a 6x6 with it. He said it was about 120 yards or so!

Odd, we used TSX's in 25-06  on several Antelope & Mule Deer, expansion was good every single time. BTW, I use Nosler in most of my rifles.

And if someone even thinks he might have an expansion issue, he can use the TTSX, never heard of those not expanding fast, even on small animals.
