30/30 rechamber in a Contender Carbine

I just bought a 21 in 30/30 stainless barrel for my contender carbine from a fellow on this board (contender222...great guy) I am thinking very hard about having it rechambered... I will hunt only deer and the occasional hog... would 30/30 AI be the best choice...have thought about 309 JDJ... have had SSK rechamber a barrel for me before and had great success with it... but how hard is it to make the brass??? I have had a 6.5 jdj and a 375 jdj and they were simple. Other than SSK who could I send this too??? What about 30/40 Krag???  thanks for the help...Robbie

I'm a big fan of the .30-40 Krag.  I have a T/C 14" rechambered to it and a Bullberry carbine barrel in .30-40 also.  Both are excellent shooters and great deer killers.  No reason to send it to anyone else than SSK for the rechamber - they are excellent!

      30-30AI 8) vs 309JDJ 8) ?  I have both(just because they were there) and love both of them.  If you're shootin' 150gr bullets for deer I'd rate them equal.  165 gr and up the advantage goes quickly to the 309.  If you've made brass for 6.5JDJ and 375JDJ, you'll have no trouble with the 309, especially if you happen to have an old 308Win sizing die laying around.
BTW For what your stated use will be...there ain't nothin' wrong with what you already got.

thanks... for the help... been studying on it hard... I can get 30/30 AI dies alot cheaper than 309JDJ... gotta check on 30/40 krag stuff...

I think if you just load the pointy bullets in your 30-30 you will be happy.  There is not a pig or deer that has 30-30 proof fur.
I would stay with standard construction bullets like the core lock or the power points in the 150 grain.

sorry I didn't reply eairler been out of town. I use 34 gr. of imr 4198 and a 150 gr either nosler accu bond or hornedy interlock. You should start low and work up. Longest shot probably 225 yds max, and no big bulls.

Good point.   I grew up on a ranch way back when all game was shot with 30-Gun's on it (Winchester's  ;) ).   Within their limits they were great for mule deer.   Being able to go to better bullets than could be used in the 94's will greatly extend those limits.  While we also shot bigger game with them too, I'd up the anti now that you can.  I've never had a 30-30AI, but I've owned two 309JDJ Contenders and they would be my choice for deer (my choice for anything bigger was the 375JDJ... had four of those).   

New 309JDJ dies from SSK are less than $70, and they come up used for less than that now and then.

A couple of thoughts:

1)  As pointed out, the .30-30 will do what you're looking for as is.  If it ain't broke, and all that.
2)  If you just want to rechamber it because you can, a .30-30 AI chamber can fire factory .30-30 ammunition with no ill effects.  In fact, that's pretty much how you form brass for the AI.
3)  While the .309 JDJ is a fine cartridge (I can surely understand why you're considering it), you're looking at dies in the neighborhood of $70, a multiple step case forming process (at least I assume you don't neck straight from .429" to .308"), plus the cost of the rechamber.  It is definitely different from the AI, though.

I neck my .309's from .444 to .30 in one step, but I use a .308Win sizing die to taper the neck down then the .309 die.  That works much better for me.

After you neck them down on the 309 JDJ do you have to trim or turn the necks????

I have the same 30-30 barrel. Decided to just load some 125 Balistic tips and call it good. The deer will never know the difference. Have some other 125 and 130 grain bullts I haven't tried yet.

    southarkrob, I run them thru the trimmer to make sure I have a consistant length(I can trim them about as quick as I can measure them).  I have neck turned them as well but was surprised how little brass was cut off...have done others with no neck turning and seen no difference :o.
    The step with the .308Win sizing die isn't absolutely necessary, but it prevents the little wrinkles from appearing.
