Looking at an XD, the man claims it has 500 rounds through it. When I think about ten boxes of ammo, it seams like a lot. But are 500 rnds a lot? or of no consequence?

Not thru my semiautos but I've fired that many in one day thru many of my revolvers. I don't consider it much. I've seen endurance tests in magazines on semiauto handguns that went 5000 to 10,000 rounds and the guns were still functioning fine at the end. I seem to recall one on a Glock that went closer to 50,000.

might say broke in! That being said , I'd be willing to bet that a lot of single owner autos other than LEO never see that many shots.

Fredie,

I have a couple xd's in .45 & 40. I have shot each about 500 rds. They function fine with no sign of wear.

The only thing that I would consider if the the guy ran hot handloads though it, which could be doubtful, but I would ask about that.

Thanks all, I think I'm going to pick it up. Was waiting for them to "M" the XD45, but this compact feels real good in my hand and its a sweet price.

Finding Ammo might be a chore though from the looks of my early scouting.

500rds are nothing! Wouldn't even wear the break in lube off a Glock!

I checked out the xdm at a recent range open house. I didn't like it at all, but that's just a perssonal preference.

I think my SIg 220 in .45 is just about broke in..............she has has disguested approximately 15,000 rounds and still going strong.

500 rds would be enough to show whether it had any manufacturing flaws. Otherwise, it's just enough to consider the gun broken-in.

Compared with many others that still run hot, 500 rounds just makes it a rookie.

I've heard of some that think 500 rounds is a minimum for a gun to prove itself for ccw.

500 rounds is nothing. I won't carry a gun for self defense until I fire at least that many rounds through it.

It's is nothing to a serious shooter but some people would think possession of 500 rounds makes you a terrorist.

I consider 500 rounds the initial polishing stage. I shoot at least a 1000 through a new auto within a very short time frame . Springs are cheap and easy to replace when they do wear out and it takes a whole lot more than ten boxes of ammo to do it.

A former USMC armorer told me to come back and tell him what my thoughts on my Sig P220 45acp after I fire 10,20,30,40 or 50K rounds thru it. so 500 rounds is nothing!

500 rounds in a break-in period. The springs are little less stiff, which is a good thing.

500 rds is what I put through the wifes XD9sc to prove to me it was reliable. Honestly that is about three trips to the range for me. I would consider that a new gun still, providing it has been lubed and cleaned up.

+1 300 to 500 rounds is my break in.
That gun with proper cleaning and maintence will shoot 500 rounds a week for the rest of your life.

I don't subscribe to the mandatory 500 rd break in to prove reliability. If I can shoot a couple of IDPA matches with no malfunctions, I consider it good to go. These matches frequently require support hand and out of position firing, along with lots of reloads and manipulations. If it will run for a couple hundred rounds in that environment it'll run till it breaks in real life.

A lot of the auto's these days reccommend 2-300 rounds just to break them in.
Now if it was 500 really hot rounds it might matter a little.

When the Ruger SP 101 revolver first came out, G&A magazine ran a torture test and had an article about it. They fired 50,000 (that's FIFTY THOUSAND) rounds of .357 through it, without a single mechanical problem. I think there were only 3 or 4 failures to fire, out of the same box of ammo, which they concluded to be hard primers. They used 5 staff people to do the shooting, and it took about a week. They concluded that this may be the strongest revolver ever built.

Getting ready to shoot a gun in a match I will go through a few hundred, learning where the gun points and how it recoils and just geting to know it.
Also I make sure the ammo I am going to carry or use in the house will work in the gun with full mags. Nothing worse than finding out in the middle of a match the mag that worked fine with factory stuff does not like your reloads or the new factory stuff except in the middle of the night or down a dark alley.

Before using a new pistol in a match, I'll check zero with my match ammo. If it's a platform that I'm unaccustomed to I might shoot it in a couple of short practice sessions before a match. I always chamber and function check any ammo I use, either match or carry rounds. I have had very few surprises that way.

I have told this story before--for emphasis on making the point that the number of rounds thru a weapon must be very high not to conside it for a purchase. I bought a gun from a friend, he was/is a gamer and this weapon had at least 15,000 rounds thru it.
It was a good gun and well maintained. i liked it a lot and never had any problems from it---my friend wanted it back--you have too understand gamers--I parted with it.

Yes, 500 rounds is a lot of rounds... for one session. A couple hundred rounds of .40 is all my arthritic ol' hands can take at one time. Now 500 rounds for a modern pistol ain't nothing.

If the gun has been taken care of and well maintained, 500 rounds through an XD is barely enough to start breaking it in.

What is most important is has the gun been well maintained. I have seen guns that have had 1000's of rounds run through them and they are just in incredable condition...and I have seen guns that have had only a couple hundred rounds through them and they are all junked out.

The tech for Para told me you had to get 500 rounds thru one for initial break in. He said if someone calls about a possible issue - that is his first question - have you shot 500 rounds through it yet.
