Thinking about buying a 22 pump action rifle. Any suggestions for a make? I don't want to break the bank on its price. Thanks

I used to own a Remington 22 pump and sold it when I purchased a Browning BPR-22. I now own 2 of the BPR's and love them. I would buy another if the price was right.
I have looked at the Taurus 62 which is a Winchester look a like and would buy one if I find it used and I have a few $$ in my pocket

The best, to buy, is the Winchester. The Remington 12 or 121 are very good also. The only way to buy, is to buy quality.

If you buy a real Winchester, a Model 61 or a Model 62A, you will be out $700.00 - $800.00, if you by a good one.

Well; I grew up around my little brother's remington pump. Years later I gave my son a remington pump also. But one day at a gun shop while browsing around, there was this ROSSI 62SA. I fell head over heels for it. I wouldn't trade this Winchester replica for any pump action I've seen so far.
Most exciting event with it was when I had to throw lead as fast as I could pump'em thru and killed an attacking coyote. I have a post somewhere on here about it. Think I shot nine rounds and hit him 4 times, the other wounded coyote got away.

I prefer the Remington pump. Mine is an old model 572 from the 50's. Picked mine up at a gun show some 20 years ago. It's a real shooter. Still see them at show for $ 200 or so.
Nothing wrong with the Winchester's except the price.

Another option would be Henry Repeating Arms . Tho I don't have a pump yet but I would consider one. They seem to be affordable.

My pick of the litter for pumps was always the Winchester 1890, with the 1906 a close second. Probably because we had a bunch of both on the ranch, so I grew up with them. Finally had to retire the last 1890 about 30 years ago, and a few years later the last 1906. Bought a Rossi 62SA in the mid 80's to replace them, but never did get around to shooting it. I was into bolt and lever rimfire mostly them. In fact, my FFL just shipped the Rossi yesterday to a new owner.

FWIW, from what I've heard the Rossi made during the vintage mine was were great guns, but they can be iffy now.

Another nice pump if you run across one is the Savage 1909. About the only pump .22 I know of with a detachable box mag.

Mine has been rebarreled with a 17" bbl. Originals were longer. A light and handy little gun...

Nope; It's the ROSSI version of the old Winchester 62. I don't have any complaints about its accuracy, its no target rifle but it does what it's supposed to do.

I would love to have a Remington 572 Fieldmaster but I've never found one when I was gun shopping. I had an old Remington model 12 C that was my grandfathers. I have given it to my son. A model 12 with a good bore would make a nice affordable pump 22 and the ones I've seen used weren't too pricey.

I found a deal on a nickel-plated Rossi 62. WOW. What a fun and accurate rifle. Every kid who tries it won't shoot anything else at my house, even the auto-loaders. I think Taurus has its name on it and if they are anything like my M63 autoloader, it should be a dandy.

I had the untimely luck to pick up a Mossberg "palamino" lever action today. it was the same model I had as a kid growing up on the farm. Love that rifle. Its light and accurate too. Its too bad they stopped making them.

Hey Ranger44: That is a nice looking rifle. Have you handled one? The prices on the internet seem to fluctuate from site to site. Usually around here, certain local shops can beat those prices on the internet, even after taxes.

Yep - They handle almost identically to my standard H001 Henry levergun, except for the slide-action, of course.

It doesn't do much to support your local dealers, but you can probably get the best price by ordering one through the sporting goods department of a WallyWorld - check the pricing online and go to a store manager with the website stock number info, etc.

Well, i've handled more than one... I looked for one in 22WMR for quite a while, and just couldn't find one. Finally, i emailed "Anthony" who emailed me back and said he'd have one shipped to my dealer, and he did.

I don't know why, but i rather fell in love with that rifle from the first time i picked it up! So, i rushed home, checked it over, and loaded it up. It misfired a couple times, then fireing with the action quite hard to open. Then it misfired a couple more times, then fired and stuck the action. I used a cleaning rod to push on the case to open the action, and decided i better try some NEW ammo i bought with the gun. It misfired with the new ammo, then fired and stuck the action so tight, you couldn't open it with any ram rod! Even when empty, the Henry pump guns aren't smooth, and nothing like a Remington in that way...

SO, i enailed Anthony, who said they would replace it, but he STRONGLY recomended i get a lever action instead... $:-\$ I took some time to warm up to the idea, as that isn't what i REALLY wanted, also the levers cost less, so i'd be taking a loss on my new gun. Anthony told me he would pick a new lever with "extra fancy" (his words) wood and also send me a hat, gun case and mug to make up the difference, but the EXTRA FANCY wood is what caught my eye the most, as have you seen the stocks on the guns on there web page?

I took some time to think about it, but ended up agreeing to the lever with the EXTRA FANCY wood, and fairly soon my new lever was at my dealer. I drove over there, opened the box, and what i found was a lever 22 WMR that had plain jane wood. Also, the box had greasy finger prints all over it. Dang, that was a disapointment!

So, i emailed Anthony again, and send him pictures of the stock, asking him if "he" thought that was EXTRA FANCY wood. He said, NO it wasn't, and he would send the EXTRA FANCY wood as soon as he could come up with some. I told him all along, take your time, i want something NICE! Well, it wasn't long when a box came from Henry, with wood in it, but once again it's nothing more than plain jane wood!

So, i haven't emailed Anthony again about this, and i wasn't even going to tell my story, but i think it's a story that needs to be told, as just because a company will work with you, if they keep screwing up, they aren't much better than a company that doesn't...

I REALLY wanted that pump gun, and considered having Anthony send me "another" one, but even he told me i better get the lever, so there you have it!

When it comes to a pump 22 these days, buy a REMINGTON!! When it comes to a 22 lever gun, the Henrys are VERY smooth, and pretty nice guns.

I had a remington pump and like a darned fool sold it and had alwayse wanted another, a couple years back I had went to the local gun shop and he was stocking Henry lever rifles in excess of $400 for a long rifle
he had some Taurus pumps (2 rifles, 2 carbines) all in .22 mag,he said thats all the local guy's would buy in these parts,ther price was allot less than I would have thought, long story short the guns setting out were all on reserve so I orderd a carbine from him 72CS (.22mag, carbine, stainless) all the different Taurus rimfire longarms I did see all had a very nice looking hard wood stock, the only detracter I saw was the importer (lawer) bolt safety and the hammer lock key which I dident bother with and the so far hadent impeaded the operation of the rimfire.
the little carbine has very nice wood and the metal work is top notch, the only plastic on that gun is the butt plate.
on trying out the new gun just out the box, we looked it over loaded it and shot it, at 35 yards the sights were regulated already no sight adjustment was needed! no jambs or hangups, its still stiff as we dont shoot massive quantitys of ammo (.22 mag ammo is in excess if $17 a box here) its been a good hunting gun so far and has taken quite a bit of small game (ptarmagin,fox,rabbits).
A all steel .22 mag for less than $400 FOB northwest alaska I think our guy got his guns through "Davidsons" if ther is a way look round and check out a Taurus before buying one, so far Ive seen 3ea model 62's in both blue (1)and stainless(2) and the wood was very attractive figureing the 72's I had seen 4 rifles and 3 carbines includeing mine all had nice looking stocks, the one example of the model63 semi auto was blue steel and that nice grained dark wood again a nice looking all steel gun.
these taurus pumps made the Marlin 39a beside them look like a wall flower in comparrision.

The first pump I used was a Stevens Visible Loader. It had lots of use and wasn't target accurate but it was OK. Later I had the opportunity to shoot a Rem. M12C that had been fitted with a barrel liner. I liked it for it's handling.

The best domestic pump is probably the Rem M572.
