I got drawn for Muzzleloader Moose this year, in the Wood River control use area. The hunt is in November, and we will use snow machines. Gosh, these are the easiest hunts I have ever been on. Now you guys have to remember I am not out here sport hunting, I am here to fill the freezer. Ride up into the valleys, spot the Moose. Look for a suitable Bull, then put a stalk on it. Sometimes you can ride a snowmachine to with in 40 to 50 yards of it. Make the shot and then drive right up to it. Back the sled up beside the animal, then as you cut it up, drop the pieces into the sled. Drive home, shove the sled into the shed.
In Febuary when we have nothing else to do, we drag the sled into the garage and let it thaw out over night. Then cut and wrap stakes and roast, and throw the hamburger cuts in a big bucket. The main issue that day is to get it all off the bone. That will take all day. Then on the second day we grind the hamburger. I usually grind the bulk of my meat into hamburger, I keep very few stakes and roast out. About half of that will be reground at a later date and turned into Sausage, and smoked.
I've brought back five now from there so far. First year I used a Mossburg 500 with the conversion barrel in .50 cal. Second year my son used a T/C Hawken in .50 cal. Third year my wife used a H&R .58 Springfield. Then I again used a .50 cal H&R, and the next time two years later I used a .50 cal T/C Encore. I'll be using my Encore again this year.
