Loading 110 gr Sierra in 30-30
« on: July 19, 2009, 12:17:53 PM »
Got some Sierra 11gr HP Varmiter bullets that I want to load i my 30-30. I know is should only load one in the tube & one in
the chamber, but should I keep the OAL the same as factory ammo? Hornady Leverloution goes 2.53 oal; I'm gonna load these at 2.50 OAL.

The reason I'm asking is some say to load these till the bullet just touches the land, then back off slightly. Rem 125 gr SP reduced recoil ammo goes 2.485 or so.

I also got some 110gr RN .308's that are primarly for .30 cal carbines, but the dia. is right, so can I load these safely using a starting load below the same weight for another style .308 110gr bullet? These won't even come close to touching the lands cause they're short, but they're only for plinking & range drills.   thanks

;) Hank, I have loaded both Rem. 125 grain spit. and Speer 110 spit. in my .30-30. plus a bunch of other spiz. point bullets. One the the barrel and one in the tube is ALL I EVER LOAD! The big problem I ran into with these loads is they must be loaded to function though the magazine and also eject. I tried seating the bullets out a bit and often they would hang up either feeding into the chamber, or not eject if un fired. You are on the right track with using the std. over all lenght. I would if anything maybe seat a tad shorter. ;) I enjoyed shooting these loads at varmits. I also used the 125 Rem. on antelope with good results. But I only shot one with it. ;)

I don't see any reason why you can't use the same loading data for the SP's and RN's 110 gr bullets. Obviously I wouldn't start with the max loads.

Sierra makes great bullets and I shoot more of them than any other brand, but when it come to 110 gr. bullets for a .30-30 I like the Speer 110 gr. FLHP. You can fill the tube with them as they were made for tube mags.
