My Cannon
« on: July 19, 2009, 01:33:19 PM »
Hello folks.
*NG here.

I aquired a nice Cannon from a good friend in the Spring.
Can't tell much about it. The only marking is a stamp/mold marking that say's Brazil.
Caliper say's it's .070.
Been using 100 grains of pyrodex and napkins.
Shot some regular old BB's out of it.

Looks to me to be a scale Napoleon II.
It's not blued but Browned (sp).

I have a you tube video out there.
Just google little cannon BB's

Question, what is the make of the Cannon, anyone have any reviews, comments, bring it, I an't scared! Yet.....

Thank you
Had no idea what or where.
I have owned a 54 Cal CVA Mountain Rifle for years.
Been a long time since I used the MR.
SC saw fit to outlaw the sale of Black Powder a few years ago.
Got this little thing and have had a ball with it!

Welcome to the board, Marine Dad. Is your cannon barrel marked Brazil, or Spain? Does the gun in this photo look like your Napoleon model?

RIP John. While on vacation July 4th 2013 in northern Wisconsin, he was ATVing with family and pulled ahead of everyone and took off at break-neck speed without a helmet. He lost control.....hit a tree....and the tree won.  He died instantly.

The post about someone in the background, it does look like someone, but it's really one of those portable Basket Ball goal laying on it's side.

Marine Dad, your little icons along the left margin are interesting-a bit different from what we usually see, I guess they are there to tell us something about you.  I wonder if everyone takes the "muzzle in your face" photo the same way you intended it?  Don't get me wrong, as far as I know you can put about anything there you want, and we will live with it.

Hey, Marine Dad, not rattled at all by the first pic, reaches a lot of people the right way, especially if you read the "You want my WHAT?" I probably would have put a cannon muzzle with a linstock held over a lit fuze with the same question,  but...the second one looks a bit un-nerving to me! BoomLover

Marine Dad, these miniature Napoleons are well made guns, the barrels are made of mild steel, and the carriages are oak. Like KABAR2 said, they used to be sold here by CVA, now they're distributed by a company named Traditions, but as far as I know they are still actually manufactured in (mine was made by a co. named Jukar) Spain. Alright, let's get into something that may be of more practical use: These guns were designed to fire a .690 dia. lead ball, and I load it with around a 100 grains of FFg when firing ball, and 150 grains with a light wad when firing a salute. You probably know this, but just in case you don't, these barrel's have threaded breech plugs. The cascabel, neck, and filet are part of the plug that unscrews from the breech for cleaning, and I always do this after firing the gun, so as to avoid any corrosion which might start where the plug ends in the chamber of the tube. After I'm done cleaning the bore with hot water and soap, and it's dry and oiled, I put a little grease on the end of the plug before screwing it back onto the barrel to prevent BP residue from being worked back into the start of the threads when the gun is fired, and damp sponged.

That's almost the same procedure I use to clean mine.
I don't use BP since SC thinks we shouldn't be able to purchase it.
I use Pyrodex. Bit easier to clean, plus no smell!

I haven't fired a round ball yet, mostly salutes and BB's.
Few rocks, glass. Can't put the little brat down the street in it, he runs too fast.
Just kidding......

I would like to see how accurat the thing is with a round ball.
Is there lead available or will I have to mold my own?

Also, do you use a patch or a wad before the ball?

I don't use BP since SC thinks we shouldn't be able to purchase it.

Is it illegal to own there, or just impossible to buy?

If it's the latter, BP can be purchased online and shipped to your door via UPS.

In my experience, Pyrodex is not easier to clean than BP. In fact (IMHO, YMMV, etc.) Pyrodex is one of the nastiest things you can put down a barrel.

But others use it and manage to get good results. I never did.

Hell, if you'll drive to southeast Georgia I'll give you a can of FFg!

(assuming, of course, it's not going to get you arrested when you get back to SC with it)

Once you go black you can never go back...

Marine Dad,

I agree with Terry, that you should use FFg black powder if you can get a hold of some.
You can get .69 caliber lead balls from Track of the Wolf, Inc., they have an online catalog.
I usually fire mine with a patch, it makes it more accurate. No wad, except when firing salutes.

Marine Dad,

I made cursory check and Found this:

http://www.scstatehouse.gov/CODE/t23c036.htm

A quick read of this states that in excess of 5  lbs of black powder is considered an explosive. Possession of explosives (more than 5 lbs) in SC requires certain permits.  The SC State Fire Marshall is responsible for enforcement of the law.

It appears you may possess less than 5 lbs with out restriction.

For a correct legal opinion contact the South Carolina Attorny General Office. http://www.scattorneygeneral.org/  I would write the AG a short simple letter asking a simple question.  In fact " would make it a one sentence letter

Quote
Dear Attorney General McMaster,

Is it lawful for a citizen of South Carolina to possess blackpowder sport shooting.

Sincerely

Make sure the letter you send is written.  Do not email.

Share the response with us.

Thanks everyone,
The reason for the BP problem was due to a "Know it all" at a local un named, Gun shop in Greenville SC, on Wade Hampton Blvd. that I went to get my fuse.

I asked the guy if they had any 2f, in a non local accent he proceeded to made statement about the fact that "I" couldn't buy BP and started on this demeaning diatribe about SC and the laws/rules on BP.
He went on and on, finally I just butted in on his speech and asked him if he had any alternatives?
He pointed in a general direction of a wall and said if they had any it would be over there.

Seems that this guy was more interested in hearing himself talk and bad mouthing SC than trying to help a person with Money in their pocket!
I found the "area" he pointed to, saw what he had, there was the Pyrodex, and promptly walked out.

Funny how some people are just JERKS.

A lot of stores don't carry the Holy Black (anatham on Pyrodex!) is because of the storage requirements for it.  Personally, I don't see how, oh, 50 pounds of BP is more dangerous than several hundred pounds of smokelss.

Black powder is more vigorous in a fire.  But lots of smokeless gets pretty exciting in a fire, too.

This former Marine belives there better ways to build character in young Marines than polish copper pipes in heads and doing mess duty in garrison.  Last thing I want on the field battle is spit shined shoes and polished belt buckles.
