Looking to buy more powder
« on: July 19, 2009, 03:34:48 PM »
The only place in GA that I've found (and I've looked very hard...) is at Bass Pro.  They only have 2fg and finer grade Goex and with my buddy's military discount it is $18.00 per pound plus tax.  Enough is enough...

I've ordered on two other occassions from Powderinc.com and they are very nice to deal with.  However I can't find a good deal, online (their site)at least, for 1fg or cannon grade like they normally have.  I can order 25 pounds of "diamonback" 2fg for $250.00 shipping included, but certainly I don't need to be shooting 2fg...

I've looked through the listings on here and see "Crater Fireworks" listed.  They have several different types of powder for $7.00 or so per pound.  I'm sure that doesn't include shipping, but even with shipping on 25 pounds it should be under $10.00 per pound (right)?

What specifically caught my eye was this:

REENATOR CANNON

CANNON GRADE MIXED  ( 140# KEG BULK )                                              $ 50.00 / KEG

CANNON GRADE STRAIGHT ( 1# CAN )                                                      $ 4.50 / LB

***MIXED WITH FLASH REDUCER***

I do shoot projectiles, so I'm not sure about this powder.  Has anyone shot this powder or dealt with the folks at "Crater Fireworks" before?  Is there a better deal on powder anywhere?  I just want to make sure this is legit, because it is so much cheaper than anything else I could find.  the "cannon grade straight" is what I'm interested in, but at $50.00 for a 140# keg, I'd be willing to try the mixed keg.  Any idea what this is or how it would work?  I shoot a bowling ball mortar, 30 mm rifled parrot, golf ball cannon, soon will be shooting 4" mayo jars (hehehe) and my friend shoot a golf ball mortar.  On all counts it seems that cannon grade would be the best (safest choice).

Thank ya'll again for your help.

I'm on the GA/FL line, so we are a long ways from everywhere...  Yes we occassionally go into NC on hiking trips or whatever, but I think the simplest thing to do would be just have it shipped and pay the fees.

Any idea how this powder would do?

That's re Enactor grade powder for making smoke and noise.  I think there is some kind of issue with Renactor grade for shooting projectiles...seems to me it was an exceptionally dirty burning powder.

A quick look at Craters web site showed decent prices but no mention of the shipping costs or hazmat fees. That 140# keg of reenactor powder almost certainly will have to go by truck and that can be pricey.

Any idea what grain size this is?

I talked to crater about 6 months ago .,,,,not too impressed .

that 140 keg has to be sifted to where you only have the BP w/o the flash reducer and that will be approx. 30lbs BP. it is old milatary howitzer powder and you dont want the flash reducer as it causes rust.

he charges 58 bucks to send it to you ,hazrard fee ... even if you want to buy 1 pound at 14 dollars a pound  . it will cost you 72 dollars a pound  :o.

I now do bidness with powder inc . I think you might save a buck or two somewhere else but this is a full time profesional they are fair but the best thing is that they are very clear on their hazzard fees . quick too .

reenactor powder is a mixture of 1 F through 4 f . its made up from overruns on the other powders .i like it so far . I could be wrong but i dont think it is glazed ...so theres some dust .

i had powder inc. send 50 lbs shipped right to my door ,thats the limit . it took me days to get the story on these dealers .

you just have to be clear on the shipping hazard fee or you could be surprised .

IIRC powder inc hazard fee was 25bucks per 50 lb . i would get it while the getin is good .

I talked to Jon this morning at Crater Fireworks.  He was very nice and seemed pretty knowledgeable (though I am admitably not).  This is what I came up with, though I have not ordered it yet:

ELEPHANT SPORTING POWDERS
1FG                                                        $ 7.50 / LB   10 lbs:  $75.00
REENATOR CANNON
CANNON GRADE STRAIGHT - not mixed ( 1# CAN )   $ 4.50 / LB    15 lbs: $67.50
Shipping and Hazmat fee:                                                        $57.00

Total                                                                                     $199.50

He mentioned that for smaller bores (golf ball or smaller)the Reenactor cannon grade might not produce the boom that I want (it is about the size granulation of rock salt), he suggested mixing the two powders together, which suits me fine (assuming you guys say it is alright).

I do know you are not supposed to mix smokeless powders (which I would never do), but I would ASSUME that it would be o.k. in this instance, given that the powders are the same, just different granulations.

What do ya'll think?  I could go straight 1FG elephant sporting powder and come up to around $245.00 total.

Powder, Inc has done me well. Their lower cost 1F reenator power works well in smaller bores and for big bore blanks as well. They also have Goex Brand 1F and Cannon.

Unless Power, Inc changed things recently their advertized price INCLUDES shipping and hazmat fees.

Just my personal opinion but if you are used to  Goex powder you wont be impressed with Elephant. Where I shoot 1 1/2 ounce of Goex I end up going to 2 ounces with  Elephant.  I have both and I wouldnt buy more Elephant unless it was quite a bit less than I could find Goex for.  I've been buying from Jack's Powder Keg in Alabama. They seem reasonable and they ship fast.

I have a message in with Jack's Powder Keg, they are based in Louisiana BTW (very impressive and definite accents...).  I'm trying to figure out when they might be in GA or AL.  I'm not too far from most of the redneck parts of AL, and smack in the middle of it in GA...

Powder Inc. is the dealer I use.     I've been to their outlet, but it's much less time consuming just to call'em up and tell'm what you need, and they'll do the rest.  Don't worry about a buck or two savings, in the long run you'll be a satisfied customer.   JMTC.......4B

I talked to Powder, Inc. yesterday in regards to the "diamonback powder" in 2fg.  He said that if I was happy shooting the Skirmish in 1fg (which I bought from him previously), this would be very similar in granulation and that no one had reported any problems with it.  I mentioned to him about the other powder that I found a "deal" on.  He said it could be a true deal, but would depend on several factors - - chances are it would shoot, but it could leave lots of residue and may be inconsistent in "boom" and would probably need to be mixed.

I think I'll just order the Diamondback from Powder, Inc. and be done with it.  It is $250 for 25 lbs and I feel sure it will work better than the other.  Plus, I've had good experience in the past with Powder, Inc.

Goex would be $327.50, for the same amount.  If Diamondback is as good as the Skirmish, it's good enough for me.  Any thoughts to the contrary?

Tried Shutzenpowder 1Fg (sp?) from Switzerland, worked great and got it for $7.50/#. Only found a few pounds, but would buy and use it again when its available. BoomLover

I ordered 25 lbs of Diamonback from Powder, Inc. today.  Should be here next Wednesday.  Powder, Inc. has always been unquestionably great to deal with in the past (why chance going somewhere else).
