savage 170 30-30
« on: July 20, 2009, 11:57:39 AM »
I just picked one up for my girlfriend to use for deer/bear. It is in really good conditon. So who owns one or shot one? I don't know a ton about them so any info you guys got would greatly be appreciated. Any scope suggestions? My thoughts were fixed 4 or something along the lines of a 2-7x33.

They are great little rifles. I had the carbine model that would shoot factory remington 3/4" @100yrds. A fixed 4x steel tube weaver is the way to go. I hope you enjoy it. If its in good shape. Maybe it will out shoot every lever gun you ever owned in 30-30.

I had one briefly and killed one very nice buck with it. It was reasonably accurate but I think they are not a very durable gun. Mine looked very good and showed very little use on the exterior but the internals were soft and showed a lot of battering from being cycled. If I tried to chamber a round gently and quietly it would misfire. It needed to be slammed shut, otherwise all would appear normal and when the trigger was pulled the hammer would fall but would not strike the firing pin. When a fellow tried to talk me out of it I didn't argue too much. ;D
The story of David & Goliath only demonstrates the superiority of ballistic projectiles over hand weapons, poor old Goliath never had a chance.
