I have a friend who is a guide in Canada ( BC ) and he has two of the VTR's, a .308 & a .223 . He really likes them, very little recoil due to the porting, so he can see where bullet hits.
I'm not sure about the rate of twist in the .223 VTR, which will determine how heavy ( long, actually ), a bullet you will be able to use. I'm sure you will be very pleased with it, and no doubt folks who have one will join in and give you more info.
Enjoy !!

With a 1:9 twist you should be able to run the heavyweights with good accuracy. Watch the lighter weight (50 under) with the fragile jackets, might not make it to the target. Anyway, I ran mine thru it's paces earlier this year, albiet, with 55gr bullets only. (can't do much more load development yet, as a small % of the brotherhood are buying up all the availble primers to look at them sit on their shelf.) With bulk 55gr Rem bullets I achieved so-so accuracy, Until, I bought a pound of Hodgdon H-322, what a difference a powder makes. I got about 100fps less velocity than H-335, another good one by the way, but accuracy was outstanding. A powder that has been getting some press as being accurate is TAC, but I have tried that powder in a number of different rifles and feel I've wasted my time and my Primers on that one. Hornady 55gr V-max shot M.O.A. and under with anything powder I tried, (except TAC) what a difference a bullet makes.
I like the rifle alot, but never would have bought it had I not had it thrust into my hands by a friend from behind the gun counter. I actually thought the barrel was a gimmick, still do. But when He told me to try the trigger, I was sold, not only for that, but the feel and balance. I'm not a lay on the ground varmint shooter, but more of a walk around coyote shooter, and this rifle fits that role better than any I've found yet. They really didn't need to put the slots in the end of the barrel though, to an experienced rifleman, that wasn't  necessary, but to the marketing people, I guess, that doesn't matter.
Bide your time cooling off my friend, we haven't gotten there yet, But if we don't wake up, we will be lucky if we even have 28 days. CRASH87

Nice rifle - Remington - http://www.remington.com/products/firearms/centerfire_rifles/model_700/model_700_vtr.asp  lists the rate as 1:9 for 223. I use 35,40, 55 and 60 grain vmaxes for varmit shooting in a similar M700 223 - I like the 40 gr as the recoil is like a 204 Ruger and lets you see the impact. You can use a wide selection of powders - I suggest Hodgdon as alot of it is made in your area as should be available - H335,380,Varget,4895 are all potential powders. I would recommend looking at the new Nilox Coyote 4x14 SF scope on it as the camo coating will blend in well.

I just traded my Tikka Varmit 308 for a VTR 22-250. Decided I wasn't going to shoot any 600 or 1000 yard matches and it weighed a lot. Very pleased, 1/2 groups off hood of my pickup today,  hot and very windy, with 45 and 55 grain rounds. Excellent trigger. First new Rdemington I've had in years, won't be the last, new trigger has won me over for sure.................

I've been lusting after one at the gun store.  I actually bought one in 204 when they first came out but sold it off quickly.  I'm not a reloader and just couldn't abide the dollar signs I saw everytime I squeezed the trigger but I am seriously thinking of picking one up in 223 as a Christmas gift for myself.
