How many hunt with the .17 Mach 2 ? Pics please!!
« on: July 21, 2009, 03:35:50 PM »
Just wondering how many here hunt with the .17 Mach 2 ?.  I am going to get mine ready for this fall for squirrel and crow seasons.
If you have any pics please post them as well.

I have a 10 /22 to mach 2 conversion that shoots lights out! I love the little rifle. It is a head shot shooter out to 100 yards. It is not a rifle for anything larger than squirrels or rabbits(IMO) some crows have been sent down also. Shot a fox in the shoulder one night(his head was behind a tree), and he dropped but by the time I went to see him he got up and ran off!

That's a nice conversion.  This little round is addicting.

I'll say. I really like mine. At first I expected too much out of it as far as killing ability but I've reconciled that it aint a coyote killer but one heck of small game getter. No to say i wont try a head shot on a coyote if I get one  ;)

i have two, a 10/22 conversion and romanian military trainer 22 conversion, both are accurate once you get used to the romanian military trigger. they are not viable(imo)for more than 30-35 yards for reliable killing on anything other than grays.reds(fox squirrel)should get 17hmr or 22 mag.they do have the advantage of being much quieter. at 75-100 yards the 17hmr does great on muskrats, the mach2 is not a reliable killer on them at that range and head shots on a swiming muskrat is not within my ability 100 percent of the time. my experience has also been the 17 hmr is more accurate than the 17 mach2.

Are they for head shots only?  I was thinking of the 10-22 conversion. Sometimes I'm not as accurate as needed if there isn't a tree to lean on. ;) My squirrel/rabbit rifle just wears a dot scope for fast shots.

Mine is more accurate than I am! From a rest or tree branch it will put them in a 1 inch circle at 100.

Not necessary to make a head shot on small game but is capable of it easily!

Sorry OS, I didn't type it right. Do they tear up too much meat on squirrel and rabbit? I aim for the ribs if I do not feel comfortable with the head.
Thanks

No more than a 22 hollow point, but probably not much less.

I go for headshots only. One of the pics shows a straight broadside
headshot. The other pic shows a squirrel that was looking right at me.
the bullet struck almost straight on its nose. the three holes between
its shoulders are the exit wounds from fragments. It makes
a pretty substantial wound.

The 17 rimfires were certainly made for hunting.   I have three 17HM2's and three 17HMR's and love both cartridges.    Use them mostly on very small to large ground diggers and jack rabbits, but have also shot quite a few predators with the 17HMR's.   My platforms include... 17HM2: TC Contender pistol, CZ 452 and a Ruger 77/22/17 switch barrel...  and for the 17HMR: Custom Bullberry Contender carbine and pistol, Marlin 17VS.

Found some hunting pictures... First picture is early March 2002 of Belding ground squirrels shot with the prototype Bullberry 17HMR carbine on its maiden field trials with the not yet released for sale Hornady 17 gr V-Max ammo that I was testing.  Second picture is a little over a year later, another Belding but with a CCI 17 gr TNT this time.   Third is the Marlin 17VS a week after they hit the dealers shelves (2002) and the species I shoot year-round here, a little Whitetailed Antelope ground squirrel next to a 17 HMR ammo box for size comparison.   The 17HM2 is better suited for smaller diggers like these since you can't see them much past 200 yards anyway.

Evolution at work. Over two million years ago the genus Homo had small cranial capacity and thick skin to protect them from their environment. One species has evolved into obese cranial fatheads with thin skin in comparison that whines about anything and everything as their shield against their environment. Meus

never heard of a Whitetailed Antelope ground squirrel? had to look it up.
Kind of looks like our chipmunks. They are one of my favorite air rifle targets.

This is my converted Ruger 10/22.  It is a complete custom gun, with rebuilt trigger, Simmons AETEC with side focus scope, Green Mountain 18 inch taper barrel, and S&K stock.   I have another that I built for target shooting, but this one was built for turkey hunting.  Head shots a not a problem out to 75 yards.

I have owned 4 and used 2 different HM2s for hunting tree rats.  First one was an H&R single shot and my current one is a Browning BL-17.  I have it dialed in for the 17 aguilas since the round is not so explosive on the meat.

I really like the little 17's.
I've got a marling in the M2 and a savage inthe HMR.
Both are super accurate and just fun to shoot.

I have a Savage Mark II FV 17M2 heavy bbl pre accutrigger with a 4X32 bsa. This is how I defend my cherries and plums from marauding tree rats and starlings and an occasional crow.

  Here's my 77/22 converted to 17hm2 with a fluted 16 1/4 " Green Mountain barrel.

I also have a TC G2 contender in 17hm2  23" both make fine squirrel rifles.

Here's my pistol with 10" MGM 17hm2 barrel.
