Works for me! I'm 66 and the old muscles and coordination are dang sure, not what they use to be. Only thing still the same is the attitude ;D and that could get a feller into trouble! I try to walk daily, and I nearly always carry a walking stick. I make most of my own, and they sort of resemble clubs...lol! I worry more about dogs, than people, and you could possibly run into a cougar. They do show up in our little town occasionally. I'm sure the odds would be greater being struck by a hit man for the Mafia ;D

Canes or Walkin sticks do even the playing field and makes a person feel a little more secure.
That little piece of cold blue steel with the lead pellets, in my pocket don't hurt none either....

My grandfather used a cane. It had a sword in it. Pretty cool. He had every intention of using it as a sword if he ever needed defense.

Had an old friend, a VN Vet get jumped by two young men outside a restaurant one night during the winter.  They thought he would be an easy target due to him being on crutches.  My friend used the kind that clamp onto your forearm, that are not much longer than canes.  The young punks were not counting on his attitude, and the ice picks on the end of the crutches.  The old man ripped ones throat open, and gave a concussion to the other one.  The doctor at the hospital said the ice pick had hit but did not open the Jugular.  Both young men were arrested and went to jail.

Oh Yea, My Grandfather had a cane that would shoot .32 cal cartridges.

What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

Cane is a good weapon.  Part of why it's good is that you can carry it where you can't carry a gun.  A friend of mine takes one when he travels by plane.  He tells me it has the added advantage of getting him treated a little better, since he is a 'poor old man on a cane'.  Isle seat?  No problem.  Then when he is off the plane at his destination, he doesn't have his pistol but he has something.

Also, I see lots of people who are out for a walk carry a cane.  They don't seem to be using it to walk, they just carry it.  It says "I'm not about to be mugged.  Go find another victim" to anybody who happens to be looking in that way.  It's also the best way to fend off a dog, best way short of a pistol that is.

Dog attacks are a real and present threat.  The added reach and velocity of impact is a real deterrent to a group of dogs.  I think that at my age (37 and healthy) I am more likely to be attacked by a dog than by a mugger.  In a semi rural area like I live in, there are a substantial number of stupid people who think that they should be able to have their dogs run loose.  That's why they live "out here".  BS.  There is a leash law.  Dogs loose will run in packs and behave like they wouldn't when they are home alone.  Loose dogs are dangerous.  Let a dog run loose, he may get hit by a car, he may hurt someone, or he may try to bite me or my children which will be fatal to to Fido.

Plain and simple; if you need to open up a jar of whoopass, a whoopin stick may be just the thing.

What a great idea!  I'd sure like to see the look on some punks face when an old man beats him silly with a cane!
That's awesome.

There is a story about Rex Applegate using a cane to disarm two dirt bags and beat the living crap out of them in the 70's when he was walking down the street and he used a cane.  These two idiots saw a frail old man.  I forget if they had a knives, or a gun and a knife, but he disarmed the two of them and hurt them pretty badly.  Enough that they were still there when Col. Applegate returned with the Police.
For those who do not know or kinda of know the name.  Rex Applegate was an officer in the Army that wrote and taught the training manual for the rangers and behind the lines guys on Hand to Hand combat in WWII.

The English and Irish both had "stick fighting clubs" back in earlier times.  These clubs specialised in fighting with sticks from the shellieagh to the English walking sticks.  The manuals of offense and defense are still in print and can be found on the internet.  On Appelgate, mostly i remember his knife designs.

Don't forget that RA was involved with the Hong Kong police , now that would have been a good test bed for his ideas .
