two new Skulls
« on: July 22, 2009, 04:56:42 AM »
My second Yote and my first deer.  The deer skull didn't ever get as white as I wanted it to, but the gloss finish made it look good.  the yote skull came out great though.

What gave it the glossy look?

HillBill,

I cut off as much of the big chunks that I can and remove the eyeballs.  I then emerse them in water.  I fill the waterline up for the deer skulls just past the top of the skull. nature does the rest.  When the water gets real murky, I dump it ouyt leaving a little in it to leave some enzymes.  It will eventually just start falling apart.  Im telling you know, especially with the deer, it STINKS.  I cover my mouth and nose with a rag and still gag, lol.there will be  apoint to where no mare of the meat will fall off.  I remove it from the water and remove what I can.  I then leave it in the hot sun for days.  As its drying, I remove the drying pieces of flesh.  Gun cleaning picks or dental picks wrork great for getting in the litle holes and bends of the skull.  I will no longer put a gloss finish on the deer skulls it seems to turn parts of the skull yellow over time.  I have had no probs with the coyote skulls turning yellow though.

I got my sons deer skull finished the other day.i went a similar route as swift did. i boiled it first to loosen up everything and then left in the tub of water for prob 3 weeks.pulled it out, wired it to a post and hit it with the pressure washer. turned out excellent. the pressure washer really cleaned it up nice in just a few minutes. we made a nice red oak board to put it on and my son is very happy with it.thanks for all the tips!

I just boil and pressure was using this guy's technique.  Very easy and not stinky.  I've done a lot of them and within an hour and a half I can have the peroxide solution on, by the next morning it will be ready for display, although I usually let it sit in the sun for a couple days to finish the bleaching process.  The biggest thing that you need to watch is the time boiling.  I take the skull out every 15 minutes and hit it with the pressure washer. If you do this, it will never get "over-done" and the teeth and bones will stay tight.  Another benefit to this method is you don't have to worry about getting a very serious infection from possible flesh eating bacteria doing the "natural method".  It's pretty easy to slip and cut yourself picking at the flesh, and those bacteria that make that beautiful skull so clean can do nasty things inside your flesh. Do an internet search of pictures on flesh eating bacteria and you may want to start boiling...

skulls look nice.  I got on this thread as I'm preparing to do a bison head euro style - first time.  My problem is that if I try the natural way in the summer I'm very likely to have brown bears in my yard - the wife & neighbors won't be pleased.  Any advice on the boiling and pressure washing for a Horned animal like bison?

Does the boiling and PW get the brains out?

thanks

Yes, although you will need a big pot, maybe a garbage can!  PW will get the brains and everything else out, probably easier than a deer because the brain stem hole will be bigger.  I use a needle nose to pull out the membrane that sticks to the skull.  It will be self explanitory once you get going.  I have one to do of a buck I shot in November, just waiting for nice weather on weekend...

Post a pic of the buff when you get it finished.

By the way, the horns will come off of the buff, they will slide right off.  Clean off under the horn as you will the skull, then glue the horn back on.

When it is in the sun to dry I spray 1/2 water to 1/2 bleach to turn it white. I used to soak them over night with a little bleach in a lot of water. But the spray on just gets them finished quicker.

The skulls look nice.  I found two of these euorpean mounts hunting last year that mother nature made herself :D  I left a skull out just hanging and it took over a year and it didn't turn out very good.  I like that pressure washer idea!

Thanks,

I did that too once, but like you said, it didn't turn out very well, so when I was doing the boil/PW method it threw that one in also, it cleaned up very nicely.

Me and a buddy did our two bucks we shot last fall on Saturday over a few beers and a cigar...  Took about 3 hours to do both of them and had plenty of time left over to finish our cigar and a few more beers...  Photo is so-so, from phone...
