Pet loads for model 70 308
« on: July 22, 2009, 02:53:12 PM »
I bought back this rifle after about 18 yrs.  I sold it to a friend who pasted away 8 yrs ago.  It shoots real well with most factory stuff but I want to reload for it.  I'll be using 165 gr bullets.  Looking for suggestions on powders for best accuracy in the mod 70.  Been trying IMR 4064 with only good results with close to max but not great.  I have Hornady 165 sp, btsp, Nosler 165 bt and partitions.  If you have any ideas let me know.

I use Varget in my .308 rifles ... a Remington 788 and a Tikka SS Varmint. I shot the Tikka yesterday and was averaging between .500" to .750" groups with 44.0gr of Varget.

I shoot Sierra (Gameking) 168 gr. BTHP with 45 gr. of Varget.  My Model 70 loves this load.  (Deer do not care for it so much  ;) ;D ;D )--takes their advantage away..
To fire an accurate shot means to not just hit the target, but to know where the target was hit before the bullet got there.

Varget works well with the .308  and 165 gr Noslers in my 700 really shines.
I'm still working on the load and the rifle is out of the box stock but, I'm making .370ish 5 shot groups with consistency.

I went into Winnipeg last night and picked up a pound of BLC-2 before I had a chance to read this.  Looks like it should have been Varget.  Have anyone used this powder.  The Nosler manual recommends it.  I'll give it a go and see  how it works.

BLC2 is also a great powder for the .308 . I've used it a lot in the past on all my loads and I still use it with light 110gr varmint loads.
Mostly because I still have a good supply of the stuff. It's good to try different powders when working up a load. I usually pick out several good powders, primers and bullets and work from there.
