DPMS front handgaurd
« on: July 22, 2009, 03:38:30 PM »
First, thanks in advance for any reply's,  found Graybeard after buying handi rifle and will likely never take it all in.

I have a Remington R25 (DPMS AR10 ) with alum. front hanguard.  This has can be tightened beyond point where lug for sling is at bottom dead center.  Not a big deal for sling, less cool for harris bipon mounted to sling lug.  Any thoughts on clean fixes?  I know I can tighten and drill new hole for lug or use thread locker, hoping for other option that leaves no marks and still allows dis assembly.    Unfortunately the handguard tightens up to a very small shoulder so using something like an arbor shim will not be easy.

Thanks,
Shane

PS also looking for extractors for Winchester model 141 .22 rifle if anyone has a lead on these.

Two thoughts.  First it to take it your local machine shop (or find a friend who is a machinist) and have them chuck it up in a lathe and take a facing cut on the end with the threads until it turns one more revolution to where you want it when tigtened.  Same principal as installing a revolver barrel to close the cylinder gap.

The other is to use the very weakest loctite out there.  Put a smidgeon, thats less than a little ;), on the threads, just enough to hold it in place and screw it on and set it where you want it and leave it for a day to dry.  This should allow you to break it loose if you need too but still hold it in place.

Hope this helps..

A simple circular shim split to allow insertion should allow the free float guard to be tightened. Shim stock in various thicknesses can be used to align the sling stud mount and they can be super glued in place to help prevent loss during takedown if desired.. This is the tecknique used to align certain flash suppressors..and brakes..

Teflon tape may be another way to get it to line up correctly. May even be able to send it back and have them fix it if you can part with it for a little while.

Thanks all for your thought's.  I had not thought about turning end off in a lathe.  Have to get machinist buddy involved now.
