I wish that one of the outdoor publishers would reprint SIXGUNS by Elmer Keith. Used copies are getting rare and expensive.

;)Didn't Wolf reprint this book some time ago. Even at 65 it is worth every cent in my opinion. ;)

;) As stated this is a great book. My copy is probably 40 years old, I guess my god child will get it along with all the rest of Keiths books that I managed to purchase. :D

Got mine in 1962, was $10, course that $10 would buy what a $100 will now.  Got most of Keith's books including the "Sixgun cartridges and loads", they're all worth a bunch now.

I had a buddy who had enough sense to have Elmer sign his copy.
I didn't have enough sense to buy one.
Found one at a gun show about 20 years ago and have enjoyed the heck out of it.

I did find Hell, I was there by him with ease and Sixguns should have been beside it but wasn't.

Those are pretty good reads also for anyone who hasn't.

Find a copy and enjoy them.

Graybeard,
If you can sell 'Hell, I was There!' I'd like to buy it, depending on price. Also, anything else by Keith.
Could you let me know?
Thanks.

Bill did you send my book to someone else?

Which book would that be? If SIXGUNS I've still not found it and beginning to doubt I will tho it still might turn up one day. I am about to decide I loaned it out and it never came back. My copy of Brister's Shotguns: The Art and Science book did that.

So far as best as I can recall I've shipped out books to only one member here. He took a large box of them. I really need to list more.

It was a classic to be sure.

Not just for the advice, but for the style in which it was written. In today's political correctness climate, it's rare to find even a gun writer who would use language such as Keith did. It was a different time and place, and I'm not to sure we've evolved into a better species since it was first published.

I got mine as a present back in 1976 and lost it when moving a few years ago. It was one of several older books the movers lost and although I got the money for the loss, you can't just replace a book of that type, that was written when common sense was used to judge things and a man's honor and integrity were actually held in high esteem.

FWIW: If 70's thru early 80's Guns and Ammo Annuals can be found, Elmer's tales used to be included in those publications.  ;)

Ive read mine thru a couple of times and found it to be a good reference of 'the way things were'. All still valid information, and a good read (though not 'politically correct'; OK by me).
I cant imagine any revolver fan not enjoying this book.

Hey there:

That is one of my prized possessions; my autographed copy from Elmer Keith, "Sixguns". That is one book worth reading. No telling the times I have read and re-read mine.

Elmer used to have an ad in some of the mags selling autographed copies of his books.
I got a few, and notice I only have Sixguns now.
Probably loaned the others out, like an idiot.

BTW, he wrote a column for Gums mag early on.
The whole magazine is available for download one a month fifty years ago.
The Jan and Feb issues of 1960 are available right now at:

I have the book Hell, I Was There but reading this post got me interested in Sixguns. Went to Ebay and found an auction for an autographed copy going on and won it. Guess I'll see what all the fuss is about. Did some research and found some copies that were for sale for as much as $274.95. I won this one for $100.00 plus shipping.

I've got an original "Sixguns" too, and enjoy it, despite all the layout problems.

I didn't look to see how old this thread is, but Amazon.Com's got it new for $90.

A few years ago I bought a copy of Hell, I Was There from a dealer on Alibris.com.  I had read about half of it when a thread similar to this one on some other forum was discussing autographed copies of Keith books.  I looked inside the front cover and sure enough, there was the man's autograph, just as they described it.  My youngest son is somewhat of a bibliophile(I would measure his collection in tons) so he will probably end up with it and Sixguns, as well as Sixgun Cartridges and Loads.

I have most of Keith's books and just finished rereading "Sixgun cartridges and loads" written in 1936 and just about every question that I see asked today about guns, shooting, loading, etc he answers in that little book.  Many basic facts that lots of folks still don't know about
Elmer had figured out a long long time ago.

Aint it so!
Im just bored with the mostly rehash that current 'authors' drivel out. Then top that off with things they repeat that I know are wrong from personal experience.
Those old boys taught me a lot and speed up the learning curve for anybody who wants to know the real deal.
Reminds me of 'the more things change, the more they stay the same'.
But thats just me........

:D :D :D It is great to hear others recognize Elmer's skill and knowledge...He was one of a kind...something I am not sure all realize, but as skillful as he was with a sixgun, he was also and excellent rifleman and shotgunner...While I am not as fond of the 33 caliber rifles as Elmer, he knew what it takes to take game under all conditions...You guys, ever read the autobio. KEITH, it is a bit different from HELL< I WAS THERE....

I was passing through Salmon in 1979, stopped and bought a couple of books direct from Mr. Keith. Thankfully I had the bains to know to have them autographed...though he simply asked me how I wanted them signed, before I had to mention it.

I need to post the pics I have of his home and the Cabin out back where he did his writing. I think the regulars here would enjoy them.  The entire story of meeting him is amusing as well.
