270 win 20" Loads
« on: July 24, 2009, 02:50:19 AM »
Anybody have any loads for a short barrel 270? Just got a real cute 98 Mauser carbine with a full Mannlicher  stock and need some ideas on loading it. My old standby load with H4831/ 150 gr Sierra turns it into a flame throwing Missouri Mule.I am thinking perhaps a faster burn rate powder and a lighter bullet

Performance-wise your 4831 load will still be among the fastest.  Powders which give the highest velocities in long barrels also do so in short ones.  But if you want to reduce the blast and flash then a slightly faster powder may work for you.  IMR4895 or Varget would be better than 4831 yet only lose about 100 fps.  As for a lighter bullet - what you want are lower muzzle pressures, thus lower blast.  I'm not certain that a lighter bullet would automatically do that.

Max velocities from Hodgdon data with the 150-grain bullet:
H4831 = 2804 fps
IMR4831 = 2815
IMR4895 = 2704
Varget = NA

With the 130-grain bullet:
H4831 = 3019 fps
IMR4831 = 3002
IMR4895 = 2957
Varget = 2931

I wouldn't worry too much.  I used 58gr of RL-22 with 150gr bullets in a 20" ruger Ultra Lite for years till burned out the  throat and rebarrelled.  I'm kinda convinced that flash and blast are part of the short barrel deal.

I agree, H-335 a little on the quick side as far as rifle powders go and it will produce some spectacular flame from cartridges of similar size from shorter barreled guns
