IF IT FLOATS I PROBABLY USED IT.
« on: July 24, 2009, 05:28:44 AM »
With my fascination with water trapping, I have probably used more different types of boats and flotation devices than the average bear.
 What do you guys use?

I've got a rebuilt canoe that was stolen, cut in half and had holes busted in the hull with an axe. It was took to the scrap yard to try and sell and the guy got suspicous and called the police. I got the canoe from the guys son and cut the ragged part off, trued everything as best I could and drilled, silconed and bolted it back togather. Just to be on the safe side I JB welded all the bolts,  nuts and seams. Let it sit in the pond for a week with 4 cement blocks in it. Didn't leak a drop. Now I just need to have it inspected and I'm good to go. I beleive it was a 16 footer, but now its just over 13'-6". I'm hoping to use it on the river this year. Worm

I picked up a 12 foot grumman canoe last fall. Why didn't i get one sooner? Sure makes rat trapping more fun.Made it all season with out filling my waders.I can paddle alot faster than i can walk. The model i have is wider in the middle than most i've seen so its pretty stable for a canoe.

I have used a lot of 14 foot lunds, when trapping the northern lakes. It is pretty much what the land owners have available.I do prefer a 12 foot boat, but when the big winds hit,a 14 is certainly safer.
My small lakes are usually hit with my 12 foot alumacraft jon boat.It is heavier than I like, but more stable.

I have a 14ft aluminum canoe that I have had since I was 13, so it has been used for rat trapping many times. I also own a 14 ft coast guard style flat boat with a 15hp motor that is my work horse. I use it for fishing, duck hunting and my river trapline and have used it on dive jobs too. I've been around the river and boats my whole life and I've come to one conclussion. There is no one boat that is perfect to use for everything, if there was the military would be using it.
