452 FTX for 45LC
« on: July 24, 2009, 07:27:27 AM »
I just got off the line with Hornady, making an inquiry as to whether or not the FTX listed for the Bushmaster would work in a 45LC. I was told that it's too long for 45 velocities and that it wouldn't stabilize. On top of that, it's made too tougher standards and wouldn't open up at 45 velocities either.

The good thing was that the Hornady tech said, "Hang in there. Hornady is expecting to be releasing a bullet designed for 45 velocities this coming Jan". Reckon I'll hold out until then.

When Hornady comes out with the FTX for the .45 Colt it will have a cannelure, (crimp grove).
This is the reason they do not have FTX loading data for the .45 Colt, .454 and the .460 S&W mag.  The recoil of the firearm MAY cause bullet setback/ or setforward without a heavy crimp in the cannelure.

What type of .45 Colt do you have?  If it's a single shot it should be OK to use the FTX.
A word of caution:Do not use factory low pressure, 14,000 PSI. .45 Colt,  jacketed bullet loads and under in a rifle.  This may cause a stuck bullet in the barrel.  The low pressure, low speed and copper jacket create lots of friction.
If your firearm is safe with LARGE FRAME Ruger level loads,  The 32,000 CUP loads, the FTX will be fine.

You've got another current choice for a single shot, the Hornady 250gr and 300gr SST muzzleloader bullets, I get a little over 1900fps in a 20" barrel out of the 250gr SST over max loads of Lil'gun using Hodgdon 250gr XTP data.

I must be confused. What are the 45 Cal 250gr FTX bullets .452" (#45201) for if they are not for the 45 colt? I have had a box of 50 for over a month thinking they were for my .45 colt firearms.

OR you can do like me and all your own cannelures in dem dar boolits!!  ::) ::) ;)

The other problem is that the bullet must be fairly stout. I mean the ballistics of the 450 bushmaster far exceed the 45colt even with "Ruger" level loads. SO, expansion or reliable expansion could be an issue.

Out of a stout lever or single shot rifle, I think you will be in the right speed range for them to work fine.  DP

It looks like the bullet on the left is the 300gr. SST/ML and the one on the right is the 250gr. FTX.  AKA 250gr SST/ML.

This 250 grain bullet shoots very accurately out of a H&R Buffalo Carbine in 45 LC. I am using 12-15 grains Unigue and will be loading H110 soon.

I have no doubts about the attainable accuracy of these bullets and if your only shooting targets, all worries end here. But if you intend on hunting with these bullets, you can not attain the velocities of the bushmaster round with any safe load I know of for the 45 colt. This cartridge attains better then 2200 FPS with the 250Gr bullet. Hottest 45Colts MAYBE get 18-1900.

I have been shooting and loading for it for more than twenty years. The vast majority have been +p and +p+ loads. My fav load shot a 300gr bullet from a 10" contender barrel at just under 1300 FPS. Just my humble opinion here and I certainly could be wrong.

There were those that said a 270 gr Hornady spire point wouldn't work in the 375 JDJ too.
I believe they were wrong considering the usage it got with excellent results on all sizes of game.

Reckon, when I made this post, I should have said I'd called to see if I could load these for my 7.5'' Ruger BlackHawk.

Sorry for the corn-fuzion.

I've loaded them for my 51/2 inch Blackhawk.  No problems with accuracy.  Haven't tested for expansion yet.
Until you test them one doesn't know whether they will expand or not.
