6.5x55 (6.5 Swede) Handi?
« on: July 25, 2009, 09:20:55 AM »
I'm a sucker for this round, has anyone ever done a Handi barrel in this caliber?  Nothing showed up using the search function...

Was told today it's really too much pressure for the T/C Contender carbine but I suppose it would be OK in the Handi? ???

I think Tim (Quickdtoo) has a 6.5 Handi that was done by Wayne York.
You could get ahold of him for the particulars on it.

A belated welcome to GBO!!  ;) As Spanky said, I had a stub (see FAQs) done by GBO sponsor Wayne York, sent him a frame and the donor 300WSM test barrel along with a Shilen match blank, 2yrs later I got back a 26-3/8" barreled 6.5x55 rifle, shoots real good so far with the 139gr Lapua Silver Scenar, but it's only been to the range once, I have more loads to test and need to bed the forend, I get some vertical stringing as it warms up. Plan on spending about $300 for the work plus the cost of the parts, he could also rechamber and rebore a Hornet, 204 or 223 barrel if you wanted a shorter barrel, cost will be about the same.  His turn around time is normally about 6-9 weeks or so, he had put it in a drawer and forgot about it, he'd told me it would be a back burner project, so I didn't rush him, if I'd have contacted him about it, he'd have done it much sooner!!  :D

Thanks!  I don't know why nothing really pulled up using the search.  Maybe I mis-spelled 6.5? :D

A .22H, .204 or .223 barrel, eh? Plus the barrel blank?  Or do those barrels have enough meat to rebore without stubbing?

Hmmm, looks like I may need to put this on the list of things to do/have done.  At this rate, I'll have projects to do/have done 14 years after I die... ;D

Those barrels can be bored to 6.5mm, no problem and the chambers can be recut to 6.5x55. Any rifle barrel would work for a stub, although you could use a shotgun or rimfire barrel too, but they're made of 1137 steel instead of the 4140 alloy of the centerfire rifles.

Thanks!

Does the cost include fitting it to the frame?

I know I should contact them and ask but since it's the weekend... ;D  In the age of the internet, even instant gratification takes too long! ;D

If the donor barrel is already fitted there's no fitting to do, I don't think Wayne does barrel fitting tho, you can do that yourself, see the FAQs. Usually the rebore/rechamber is done on an existing rifle that's already got a barrel fitted, you just send the barrel to him and he bores and rechambers it.

OK.  I was thinking of a second barrel for either my .223 or .22H.  I've gone through the FAQs before but I figured as long as I was sending the bbl out, might as well see if they'd fit it to the receiver if I sent that as well.

I need to weigh my .223 though.  Out of my sporterized Swede Mauser, recoil is negligable.  Out of a lightweight single shot, I dunno...I am by no means a recoil junkie! :o

Recoil should be minimal, 11-12lbs in a 7½-8lb Handi.

the swede might the perfect chambering for the handi. the 6.5x55, you know is very slightly a "rimmed" case, and pressures are moderate for superb ballistics.

The 6.5 Swede is IMO the perfect rifleman's round.  8)

Am straddling the fence on getting a 6.5 Swede barrel for my Handi vs. getting an Encore just for this caliber.

What is the cost of getting a 6.5 Swede barrel made for a Handi?

The 6.5 Swede is a heck of a cartridge loaded mild or a bit hotter.

I just realized you had pics attached!  DOH!  Where did you source the thumbhole stock set?  I think I like that...

It's an H&R stock made by Boyd's, see the H&R website, it comes on some of the Ultras, Boyd's sells them as seconds occasionally. Take a look at the FAQs link titled Let's see some Handis, there are 7-8 pages of pics.
