Can someone tell me what's going on with my tomato plants?
« on: July 25, 2009, 01:46:35 PM »
Can someone tell me what's going on with my tomato plants? I have taken some pictures so you can see what I mean. The top leaves are deformed and look like they have not developed properly. This is the first year I had tomato plants die. I have many that are doing ok but still not like past years. Let me know what you think. Thanks Dale

Dale,  my daughter yook a look, (she's a master gardener).  She says it looks like verticillium wilt.  Here is a website with info...............

Yea that sounds like it. Like the article said it will affect pepper plants also. I had several pepper plants wilt up and die also. Looks like I will need to move my garden next year. >:( Dale

My daughter suggested you plant in buckets, change soil every year.

That would cost way to much money. I will just move the garden to a new part of the yard next year. We have an acre so that will not be a proplem. Dale

Wilt is a good possibility. My fist thought was 2,4D drift when I saw the pictures. Tomatoes, Roses and Grapes are hyper sensitive to this class of herbicide. If you have done any kind of weed & feed program to the you may want to consider that possibility. If wilt is the cause, and likely is, simply selecting a wilt resistant tomato variety is easier than mioving the garden. Ask the local garden center next spring for advice on the right one for you and your needs. If you have a couple different varieties out there right now it would explain why some are healthy and others are suffering.

The thing that really makes me think it is what machanic's daughter said it was is because I lost about 8 pepper plants they just wilted up,the leaves fell off and they just died. Dale

You should be able to get used 5 gal buckets from construction sites for free. Just clean them out well and drill some drain holes in them.

I do understand what you guys are saying but I plant at least 40 or 50 tomato and pepper plants each. Then I got cukes, green beans, yellow beans, carrots and radisth's. I don't have a little garden and have no plans to scale it back. If anything it will get much bigger. My garden now is over 1000 square feet. I do not see how I can do this in buckets. Dale

My tomato plants are looking better this week. I pulled a few of the ones that were doing bad. Dale
