When I lived down south, (Lower 48) where feral cats exist I would not let my dogs go near a loose cat.  Rabies.

At least here in Alaska we don't have feral cats, they can't make it through the winter.  People keep turning Pheasant, and Quail loose, and we may see them for a few years if the winters are not too bad.  Then we will have a rough winter and no more Pheasant and Quail.

What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

If people have cats they should keep them inside and not let them loose, unless they are working cats on farms. (for rodents)

Not true!  The problem is humans feel their cats only kill rodents outside.  Real truth is they kill whatever they feel is fun.  Cats are vermin when they are allowed to roam freely.

I agree. They really have fun killing rodents and most anything else of small size. They do a great job on the non-native lizards around here. They are what they are, hunters, for fun and for food, just like humans.

Not true again!  Cats are nothing like humans, they are cats nothing more.  Humans have logic and reason, cats don’t have human like thinking.  I have never heard of a cat logging onto Graybeard for its comments on this subject, so they are not human or human like.  More problems are people thinking cats are human or human like, nothing could be further from the truth.

That must be horrible being able to read cats minds.  I would hate to have to listen to what they were thinking.  ;)

Oh I know this sounds awful, but I hate cats.  If it wasn't for Matt the stray ones around here would have "disappeared" already!

ncsurevyor, here is the statute you are looking for

14-360
b) If any person shall maliciously torture, mutilate, maim, cruelly beat, disfigure, poison, or kill, or cause or procure to be tortured, mutilated, maimed, cruelly beaten, disfigured, poisoned, or killed, any animal, every such offender shall for every such offense be guilty of a Class I felony. However, nothing in this section shall be construed to increase the penalty for cockfighting provided for in G.S. 14-362.

Cats are like some of the people on this site- they do what they want and nobody can change their minds- so they are like humans.

I personally hate Jack Russels. They are crazy dogs. I have a friend that lives on a farm and has 2 of them. Whenever he has people over- he has to put them in their cages. They go around and pester everyone. Always after our ankles. Barking all the time. Nosy PITA. Can't go hunting with them - they bark at everything and scare the game away. USELESS CRITTERS
Our mail man had a jack russel until it jumped into his car window and tore his car's interior to shreds. Our neighbor has 2 jack russels. They had to install an invisible fence. Anyone who passing by would be attacked.

I am a Lab man. I am used to a dog that listens and is well tempered. Plus he retrieves waterfowl.  He just sits or lays on my lawn and looks at people with his soft eyes as they pass by. When he is in the house- he barks when someone comes to the door; other than that he is rather quiet. NO BETTER DOG THAN A LAB.

I thought that verbiage was filled with ambiguity myself, Seems you cant kill or catch an animal  for the purpose of killing it!

NO fishing trapping or killing!

Well now. I have been reading this little string and letting it go.
However, I like cats.
I have had one or two, over the years and one for a number of years.
They were good pets.
The one I had for a number of years we would let out at night.
SHE was a beast. My son said that when she walked the street all the dogs would go too the other side.
If she caused a problem, I never heard of it. The kids in the neigborhood seemed too like her.
She would come around for a visit when we gathered out in the yard with the neighbors during the evening.
We had dogs at the same time and they got along.
I have a dog now and there is an old yeller cat and an old black one that runs the fence at night. They cause no problems and the dog just looks at em when they come in the back yard.
Blessings

I know I'ld rather have a cat like the one I own now, than a Jack Russel. And I consider myself a dog person. But, JohnnyC, you hit the nail on the head. The one Russel terrier a friend of mine owned several years ago, just about got his butt kicked. He was a dealer at the gun shows here in Ohio and Mich. And he use to bring the dog with him all the time. He use to jump out from under the table covers and bark at people's feet all the time. On more than one occasion, other dealers at the shows would tell him to keep that little yapper shut, or they would kick his a**. Several promoters told him he had to leave the dog at home, or chain him up outside, or something. I know the one time I split a motel room with the guy, on 3 different occasions, the dog woke me up, when he started barking at 2-3 and 4 in the morning, just because he heard something. Last time I split a room with the guy. If I have to bend over to pet a dog, he's to small. And if he barks to much, I'll cure him of that too. gypsyman

I know exactly what ya mean JonnyC. My Jack Russell has to be locked up every time someone comes to do some work on the house, and he warns anyone not to come on the place when we're not home, and he does bite. He doesn't bark very much though, unless there is something going on out of the ordinary, and is for the most part rather quite. He is an excellent squirrel and hog dog, and he is busy most of the time killing snakes and field rats, and cats, that wonder onto our place, and not prone to be lazy like your Lab. He does however like to kick the neighbor's Lab's ass when it gets loose and tries to take a dump in our yard. That Lab gets loose and gets into everyone's trash cans, and is a nuisance to everyone down the road except us. Man those labs can lay a pyle down that would stop a riding lawn mower. That Lab will come over and just get poised to take one, and bam. He's sent home packin and squealing by a dog half his size. It's a site to see and, a hoot to watch. :D

Ok fella's I have to fess up.  Last year a little kitten showed up at my door when it was freezing cold.  I put it under my coat for a while, then brought it in and gave it some warm milk.  It has never left.  I guess I just fell over to the dark side.

On the other hand, I hate a feral cat.  When we lived in the country, we had more trouble with wild cats than any other critter.  They can raise ruin with chickens and such.

I guess I'm on both sides of this argument ???

The fact of the matter, whether it's a stray cat, a feral cat, a stray dog, or a feral dog, or either that the owner can't, or WON'T, keep up, their a pain in the posterior and are dealt with accordingly.
If my Jack Russell were allowed to run loose he would be a neighborhood nuisance and menace until someone shot him. He likes nothing or anyone but, my wife and I, and my mother in a pinch.
He is here in a half acre chain link fenced area to make sure everything and everyone goes by the rules on my place. i.e. If you ain't invited you ain't welcome. Unless of course your a pit bull, a cat, or a Lab retriever. Then you will never be invited, or welcome. ;D
