Diffrent type of lube ??'s
« on: July 26, 2009, 07:44:24 AM »
Need some input here guys , I have a couple dozen solid sticks of lube that I want to use my Lyman 450 , is there any easy way to make a hollow mold so that I can just drop a stick in with out having all the lube mess ?

And 2nd. is there an easy way to color lube ? I'm wanting to use diffrent colors for diffrent cal. bullets , kind of a quick , just look and grab refrence .

If you had a hollow mold you'd have to melt it to pour into the mold so while it's melted just pour it into your lubrisizer.  While it's melted drop in a crayon or two of whatever color you want.

That thought had crossed my mind , just wasn't sure how much of a mess it would make with the melted lube running out till it started to set , I like the crayon idea , it should work well and I can buy them cheap at the local Dollar Store .

Now for another ? , whats the easiest way to melt the sticks ?

Heat?

A double boiler is safest, but a small saucepan that your wife will let you have will do o.k. over a low heat.

I would think candle dye would work for different lube colors.  ;)

Just did my first batch and it turned out fine , used a small plastic butter bowl and the wife's microwave  ;D ( don't tell her ) as for color I snagged a red crayon from the little ones bag of extra's ( she'll never miss one - right ) .

Before I added the new lube , I boiled the 450 for about 1 hour in one of the wife's big canning pots to clean it out good , all this while her and the munchkin were away .  ;D

Now to get the flow re-set and I'm in like flint .  ;)

PS --- Thanks guys

I allways melt in my lube. It keeps it from having air pockets in the lube chamber which can be a regular pain in the ___. Just fill the resivour before it gets totaly empty and it wont run out. I keep an old micrwave in the shop just for doing it so i dont make a mess in the wifes.

I do it a lot like LLoyd. I use a GLASS measuring pitcher in the micro wave till the lube melts. THEN a quick pour into the empty luberisizer.takes less than 5 minutes.
