Has anyone rechambered for the 5.7x28 yet?
« on: July 27, 2009, 11:46:26 AM »
Just wondering if someone had taken the trouble to rechamber for this round yet and has some performance data.

(1) Looks as though it might be an interesting cartridge right there with the 218 Bee, 22 Hornet and 221 Fireball.
(2) Has the same case capacity of the K Hornet at 14gr.
(3) Maximum pressure at 50,000psi.
(4) Uses Small Pistol Boxer primer.
(5) The case length at 1.14" is too small to rechamber a H&R/NEF 22 Hornet, so it would have to be a 22LR or 22WMR rechamber.
(6) The ammo costs about $20 for 50 at Cabela's, so getting your starter brass will be pretty cheap.

P.S. I won't be the least bit surprised if Tim has already done one!

I don't think that anyone around these parts has done one yet, I too was curious about it. But then again it's only a matter of time  8) ;D
I believe it would be a project for someone that really loves the little cartridge, as many other offerings eclipse it in performance out of a rifle, but it would be a load of fun.

Maybe it already exists in a Baikal single shot.

That's not one I'd be interested in, I have a 221 Fireball,  Georgeld did a 17x28 tho.

Tim: It stops Oct 2007 without a conclusion. Do you know how it ended? I am not interested in going to all that trouble, what a pain. A straight 5.7x28 rechamber would have to be easier than his.

I know of a couple 7.62x25 (kinda sorta parent case) that have been made by a gunsmith in New York State. He used the stub process . I can't see any reason not to go that way if you want  a 5.7x28.

That 7.62X25 is one I would like to see.  That round has really impressed me in the CZ pistol as a very fast, flat shooting round.  DP

So would a 221 Fireball from a Hornet and it would be done on a 4140 barrel instead of 1137. If you look at georgeld's profile and his last posts, you'll see he kinda just left it up in the air, he hasn't been here since Feb. ???

I know georgeld, he helped me get into reloading "ages" ago.  We used to talk back and forth, but haven't received mail from him in forever.  I do know he finished the cartridge though, he showed me some crows he shot with it.  Destruction.  It was accurate as well.  He was older, hope he's ok.

Tim: Yes the 221 is a no brainer, and it improves things overall by delivering more than a Hornet.

This is a cool Lil cartridge!!  At least everything I have read being true. I don't have a use for it.. but that never stopped me before... ::) ::) ::)

Guess I'll add it to the "may-do" in the future list.

A friend of mine has been playing with the 5.7, but not in a handi.  He is having fun loading and shooting it and is sifting the truth from the internet rumor.  Good times.

I think that Tim is right (again ;))  The 5.7 is kind of like a .221 fireball, but it's innovation is that it is designed to feed in autoloaders and get it's performance in the short barrel of the P90 PDW.  While that's cool, it's strong points are not as aplicable in the NEF platform.

In short, the 5.7 in a varmint/target rifle won't do anything a varmint/target cartridge won't do better.  On the other hand, if you want to do it because you can I'm all for that.

would rechambering a 22 or 22 mag work with the firing pin position?

It would on an SB2 centerfire rifle frame, rimfire bores aren't offset(except on the Versa Pack), the SS1 rimfire frame has the offset firing pin.

Guess it's time I got back to you guys.  Ty Kemp sent me a note you've been talking about me. Just found this thread finally. Thanks Ty.

Wife died end of '03, I'm looking for a new mate, so have been haunting the dating site's and doing some of it. So far, still in the same boat though.  Otherwise I'm doing fine, much better than last yr. Though now am having teeth pulled and trying to get uppers. Dentists sure are greedy!! Won't be a new trk/car, or more guns this yr, for sure.

Ok, on the .17x28.  Ty's mistaking, I fwd'd pic's Foxhunter/Saubier sent me of the crows he killed with his in a CZ bolt gun. I've only killed 9 for 9 prairie dogs less than 100yds with it.  Impressive there.

I used a NEF: HMR barrel on a .223 action, not sure which one, seems like it was a SB2, am not sure there. IT was the one I got from a fellow here from Austin Tx though.  Had a dozen petty PITA hassle's with it. Reamer was too tight a neck. Was told about it ahead of time. Not knowing what that meant, I told the guy it didn't matter to me. Ended up it was a major hurdle causing blown out shoulders as the case couldn't move when fire forming. Sent the barrel to Reno to a buddy with a neck reamer that opened it up from .195" to .203", that solved the problem. Reamer also was shorter necked/longer bodied than foxhunter's. So it's a one of a kind chamber which is not good. While waiting on getting the work done on it, went ahead and loaded 330 rnds according to foxhunters specs. Had to pull them all down and fireform the case's. Oh man!!!!

Case wouldn't fit as the ejector? Wouldn't give enough to snap over the rim.  Fellow on here agreed to tinker with things and got that fixed up. Will leave him nameless unless he wants to speak up. Spent a lot of hours making petty sized parts I could never afford to of paid the man what his time was worth.    Did pay what he asked though, for his time, he worked mighty cheap.  Among other things, he thinned the ejector down to about 1/16" so it would have room to work. Made a tiny pin w/spring to push it into place and hold the case in.

Once I got the gun back.    Was trying to find max charge w/H110.  10.0gr, fired 5 x's in the same case. Worked fine. Upped it to 10.2gr and blew the primer/hole out to 1/4" dia. busted the ejector he'd thinned down, blew the plastic trigger guard up. Drew a little blood but, nothing major wrecked, just got mighty lucky is all. Once it was fixed, I milled a new ejector from tool steel & tempered it now, to the same specs he'd made the cast part to.

It's an inch shooter @ 150yds. Sure does a JOB on p.dogs, but, haven't been able to get back out since early summer last yr. Most of the p/d's around these parts died off last yr too.

10.0gr H110, or 1680 w/20gr V'max==3450fps.

Contact me by e'm if you'd like more details on this project. I've got about $330 in it total, incl the gun. This was my first wildcat. So had a lot to learn. Lots of good advice and help along the way, am very grateful for the two guys that worked on it for me. Really, they did the fixings. Without them it would never have been completed.
