Question about a wildcat
« on: July 28, 2009, 03:48:54 AM »
I have a 45/410 nea survivor the 45 colts don't shoot so good.  I have loaded some 445 supermag brass with 45 cal bullets using the same data for the 445 supermag.  It takes 2-4 fireings to fireform the brass,  should I increace the powder buy a little or should I just load as I am now.  Accuracy is ok to good with these loads . Thanks in advance....lost

You are not getting the same presure in the longer cases that you did with the Colt cases. If you have a cronograph I would recomand that you load the .445 cases to the same velocity as the .45 colt cases, or simpler get some .454 cases and load them to the colt velocities.

Not having your brass form for two - three firings is not uncomen. I form my rifle brass with 16gr win231 and pillow fluff. That works better than a fully loaded round.

Lost,   Please take no offense here but,  What is it that you are trying to do with this barrel ? Get a accurate hunting load,  target shooting ?
To my way of thinkiing this barrel having a chamber that does not fit a 45 colt or the 455 super mag, has a smooth bore, and a rifled choke at the very end of the barrel just is not very conducive to accuracy.
I know this combiation works well with some 12 and 20 ga. shotguns with a smooth bore and rifled choke tube shooting saboted slugs, I have one myself !
I think the sabot being made of a soft material and a little oversize to the bore can align / stabilize the slug better before it hits the rifling.   >:(
I just don't think you can expect much accuracy with that type of barrel.

Jed I should have stated this barrel is a 45 cal. rifle that has a 3" 410 chamber,  basicly it's a long TC .45/410.  This gun is by no streatch a target gun,  just hunting and plinking.  The 445 cases do give better accuracy than the colt cases, I just want to know if my loads are giving me enough pressure to seal the chamber.  With light 45 colt loads there is no recoil or muzzle blast (quieter than .22 shorts makes a thump sound ).   I'm not offented at the least by your post, I didn't give enough info.  and when I don't know the answers when I get a responce I don't take offence ( unless I'm called an idiot which you did not ).  thanks....lost

I have a 20 ga with a slug choke(replaced by a fully rifled barrel). With sabbot slugs from a clean barrel, the first 2 shots are usually about 2" at 100 yd. The third shot 6 or 7 inches and the fourth shot is over yonder and it's down hill until I clean it again.

Have you tried some of Magtec's brass .410 cases in it, loaded with bullets? That might work better still.

I'm gonna try the 460 cases in the same barrel to see if that will work, they seem to fit better in the chamber.  Also considered some 444 cases but it chambered to tight to try in my barrel.  I've had the barrel 7-8 years and never used it yet.  If it works, will have to drill and tap for rings and bases.  DP

Take a look at this link for the 11.4x74R Wildcat uses the 9.3x74R case.
