280 Rem barrel ?
« on: July 28, 2009, 12:49:53 PM »
I was looking at biding on a 280 Handi on a action site. The Rifle was a 280 rem Ultra and said it had a 21" barrel. Are all 280s 26",or was some made with shorter barrels? I ask the seller if the barrel had been chopped, his answer was that it didn't appear to be.  All the barrels I have the recess with the flat surface. This one had a recess and a tappered surface, looked like it could have been crowned with a drill bit. He posted a picture of the muzzle and it looked a little rough. Sort of smelled a rat so passed on the bid. The receiver was a M so couldn't even work for the barrel program.  Zeak

I don't think there was ever a 21" barrel offered. I think he's pulling your leg.

That sounds too fishy for my liking. There are some very dishonest people on some of the auction sites. All the more reason to shop in the classifieds here.

And hacksaws are everywhere.  I saw that auction too. the barrel does look short.  Could be one that somebody cut down to make a handier length.  I've got a 45-70 with an 18 in barrel, it is so ugly it's cute.  But it fits in a box blind and lays across my lap, so I can shoot out either side or the front without banging a long gun around inside the blind.  So what if I lose a couple of hundred feet per second.  Bambi can't seem to tell the difference.  Off the subject I know, but it appeared to be what happened to that one.

Dropping 4" off the 45-70 barrel isn't gonna cut the speed 200 fps.  Out of the 280, 5" might drop 150 fps but probably less.  Lot of 280's have 22" barrel anyway.  DP
