both work just fine. Hit where you aim and you'll have some good BBQ regardless of which round you use.

I have taken numerous hogs over the past 20 years in Florida with both the 44 mag and the 3030.   Almost all were one shot-bangflop, save for one big mean boar that decided he wanted a piece of me.    He started to charge at about 30 yds, and my adrenaline kicked in working the lever on my Win 94 as fast as I could.   hit him four times and he did a nose dive just in front of me.   I would hunt with either cartridge.   I use 150 gr in the 3030 and 240 gr Hornady XTPs in the 44 mag.

Well, as they say, use enough gun!!!  :D

A few years ago I got all excited about hog hunting, there's some isolated pockets of em in Oregon, my huntin partner's son's father-in-law was a retired Oregon state LEO, and knew exactly where they were, but by the time we had a trip planned, Jack's son had split the sheets with his worst half and the family ties were cut, and the hunt never happened. That's as close to any hog hunting I've done, just the research and plannin part!!  :-\

Here in Missouri Hogs are now pests - no tags, no season, no limits. South of Hwy 50 is supposed to be the defining line for the biggest populations. Anyone done hog shootin' south of Hwy 50? What did you use?

I hunted hogs in Florida for about 14 years with a 336 Marlin .30-30 without a hitch.  A while back, a panicy Michigan neighbor showed up at supper time asking me to put down a rampaging 850-1000 pound domestic boar.  I didn't even think twice and grabbed the Handi .45-70.  Bang flop, end of problem.  They put him on a gambrel on a tractor's front loader and his front hooves were still on the ground.  With the .45-70 "what's enough gun?" is never a question.

If I'm ever around one that doesn't go down with a 45-70, better not get between me and where I'm running to!!!

Killed a bunch of penned hogs with a 22 rimfire, its just correct cns placement.  Killed more with the back side of an axe.  Wild hogs will build up a thick mantle, but just don't shoot there.  A head shot with a 30-30 will always do the trick....unless you miss.

We can debate whether a 44 mag or a 30-30 is enough gun. But what is enough gun for any thing? I think it has been proven either one will take a hog. Shot placement and bullet construction are very key. Personally I would use the 44 mag out to 75 yards of so and if my shots were any further, I would use the 30-30 - both with appropriate bullets of course. I personally do not have any experience with hunting hogs, but I have talked to many that have shot them with 223's. I do not think a 223 is enough gun personally, but we could debate this all day on if the 223 is enough gun - like is the 223 enough gun for deer. It has been debated here extensively with people on both sides of the fence. I know that both the 44 mag and 30-30 have taken pretty big critters - like Moose. Even with a 44 handgun. Like I said earlier, 44 up close and 30-30 for longer shots - but that is my un-facted personal opinion. Good Luck and Good Shooting

WHAT THE HELL ... Bullet Proof Hog Head ??  Please direct me away from the store that sells those slugs lol  I have layed hogs down with the 45 lc ( rifle), 223 ( 75gr TAP) , 270 wsm , 243 win and the good ol'  '06  .. Only one that gave me a hard time was the 45lc with a speer gold dot 250g HP .. Hog was easily over 200 lbs , other then that kills have been effective with all .. I would think the 30-30 the advantage on velocity , but 44mag out a rifle can surpass it in the energy department when loaded right.

I know what these boys with " The Big Ones " are talking about , and in those instances i would think being smart about it plays as much a role as shot placement..

But if you know your going out where big hogs live or that is what your looking for and you plan to be on the ground in the thick stuff with them then carry the bigger bored rifles , I like the 444 marlin loaded hot with a 300+ gr. flat nose hard cast slug , My brother likes the H&R 45/70 ( i can load that cartridge to produce over 4000 lbs of energy at the muzzle)

That aside the 250 lb and down shouldnt be any trouble , and if you are in a tree hit him with either no matter his wt.

Just my thoughts on it ,

I've lived in Florida most of my life.  I have seen many hogs killed with many cartridges.  I have seen 2 wild hogs near 300 lbs each killed with a 22 mag.

what would you perfer to have in your hands when you just happen to step on a snooze'n
300lb bore?
in the rain, when he did'nt have a clue you were around!!!!
laying on the creek bank covered with mud.
my friend said he looked like a mound of dirt/mud or sumthin!!!!!!!! other than a hawg!!!!!
one thang fer sure!! prolly not a one shooter.
more like a auto scatter with 000 buckshot and hopefully its been maintained.
or a sks with a 30rd mag. you can bet your hiney, it won't jam... if its right!!!!
side-arms are great to have when hawg'n... but in this situation, buy the time he drawn his piece...
his leg mussle was already de-tached...
when your hunt'n them critters is one thing... but when your hunt'n other things and  no hawg's are know to be in the area, is another...
they are sly, smart, and deadly. i've hunted them all my life
there kinda like shoot'n irons and people... no two, thinks or acts the same.

Sounds like in his situation no gun would have done him any good if he never fired a shot. I have killed hogs with .35 rem, .44 mag carbine and handgun, 30-30 and .243. I shot one with a lead cast 405 grn 45-70 loaded at factory but it only weighed 60 pounds on the hoof so I don't count that as major comparison to anything.  The biggest dressed out at 275 and was shot with the .243 broadside and quartering away at a trot. Fell flat one step.  .30-30  with 170 grn bullets  is my gun of choice for hogs.  A shotgun would have slugs for fodder for me but the state trappers kill a lot of hogs from helicopters with buck shot from 3 1/2  12ga autos.  Too much recoil for me and I can handle alot.
Deer hunting is mostly fun then you shoot one and it turns to work.

Backstrapped him and fried it, was good with potatoes and jalapenos.  Alot of the ones we shoot are just population control and are targets of opprotunity. The land owner said he will throw us off the place if we don't shoot everyone we get a chance at and probably means it.

Those Speer Gold Dot bullets for the 45 Colt aren't worth their weight, especially at Ruger Only level loads and in a rifle.  They aren't built tough enough and tend to come apart very quickly.  I'd stick with the XTP's and hard cast lead bullets myself.

Schultz ,

The three hogs that did retain that Gold Dot were perfect mushrooms and 85% to 95% weight retention , those were 150 lbs. hogs and down ... I agree thou they werent really designed for a rifle but they had a slower burning powder in them then the winchester 225 g silver tips thus giving me 75 yards accuracy.. Those ( silver tips) dropped like a rock after about 35-40 yards ... Since i wasnt loading my own at the time it did what i needed it to do up to a point ... Thou anything hotter ( modern data) then that would put at risk the Uberti's brass frame .. And that wasnt gonna happen to my $900 rifle ;) lol

But the end result was me picking up the tools to reload that caliber and running a 250g RNFP hard cast at around 1350+ fps from the rifle which would be just over 1000 ft.lbs. of energy much better results i would had to of predicted versus the Gold Dot ... But never got to put the load on game , Sold the rifle to my old man and traded the matching pistol for my 444 Marlin lever .. And with that Marlin rifle there isnt any question on its stomp 'em power  ;D

I love bullet proof hog stories. Their funny. We have had feral hogs for over well over 100 years here, and I, although am not 100 years old (60 instead) have never met one of these bullet proof hogs. In fact I have never met one that was 223 proof, 4570 proof, 3030 proof, or 357 mag proof. When I stalk hunt them, I sometimes us an M4 loaded with Blackhills blue box 52 grain match hollow points. By the way! I have a friend that has never met one that was 22lr proof, and I have several friends that have never met one that was knife proof.
I have some more friends that have never met one that was bulldog proof, and they have even trained some very big hogs to ride on the back of 4 wheelers, after they were tied up of course, and providing there were enough guys to get the hog on the racks.

Now in answer to the ORIGINAL QUESTION. Either rifle will do. The 3030 will take anything on the North American Continent INCLUDING BULLET PROOF HOGS, ::) ;D, and reasonable down to earth hunters have been proving it for over a hundred years now. The 44 mag in close is AT LEAST as good as the 3030, in close. ;)

Tough pig!

He wasn't very tough he was already down experiencing ignorance from hunters first hand. I once shot a cornered feral chow dog, 4 times with the renouned  ::) 9mm using duty issue hollow points in the head. They bounced off too, and I went back to a 40 cal.. He finally decided he didn't want to fight, and when he turned sideways I punched one thru the heart lungs, end of story.
44 mag power doesn't make up for ignorance or bad shots. A hog gentlemen, is just not that hard to kill.

I was curious so i looked up  some ballistics, Now i know the 44 mag will do the job and i have one and really like it, BUT the numbers really say the 30/30 will do a better job. Comes down to personal preference.

Like Dee said out to 100 yards the 44 looks good, 100 yards is a very long shot where i've hunted hogs

The .44 mag in a rifle is a whole different beast than the already effective .44 mag handggun.  240 grn rem softpoint won't bounce off of much if it is breathing.  I have shot a lot of deer and several hogs at extreme ranges out to 40 yards with mine. I just like the .30-30 better. Dee ask your friends if they have trained any to ride in a john boat. Buddy of mine loaded one about 200 lbs in a 16' with two other guys and three dogs. Just got out into the river good and was starting the motor when Houdini got loose. Hogs and dogs went at it again, hunters went in the river along with the video camera they had recorded the catch on. The boat fight would have been great on YOUTUBE you think.

I don't know if I could sit thru a video like that. It would have to be hysterically funny to watch. I do have some okie friends that use john boats to hunt small areas on the Red River (Oklahoma-Texas border), but the hogs are usually expired from a well placed knife wound. The ones they catch they actually use L.E.HANDCUFFS! So I guess instead of capturing the hogs they have ARRESTED THEM. No wait! That won't work the hunters don't have a L.E. commission.  :-\ Hey! Their in Oklahoma. I'll bet it will. ;D
That video would be a hit ANY WHERE. LOL
You may all go to hell, I will go to Texas. Davy Crockett

Thanks to all for your replys. Very good info. I should have known the 30-30 has a proven track record for years. Hoping to set up a hunt with my boys. Have two 44 Handis for them. I will use either 44 or 30-30. I've heard the bullet proof stories and wondered about the smaller diameter and weight bullet.
I had a 45-70 long barrel in my hands yesterday. Felt a lot better than I thought it would. Found a new shop with a few different Handis. I think it was $430.00. I could see the peep sights! Don't think I'm ready for one, YET!!!! Hopefully not. Maybe someday!  Sooooon? Think they had the short barrel too. I'll Be Back.

Dee, that's kind of funny.  You're friends have not found a hog that's bullet proof to a .22 lr, but you found a dog that was bullet proof to a 9mm and a .40
Aim small, miss small!!!
