25-06AI
« on: July 29, 2009, 02:17:34 PM »
I am thinking of changing my 25-06 Ultra to the AI once I get back to the states. Has any one done this on there own H&R? What kind of succes has anyone had? What are the pros and cons?

Welcome, and thank you for your service!  ;) You can't make an Ackley Improved out of it, but by PO Ackley's definitions, an Ackley chamber can shoot factory ammo, that can't be done with a fixed barrel since the barrel can't he set back as it can on a threaded barrel. You can have it rechambered to an Improved version, but must fire form brass using either a false shoulder(best) or seating hard into the lands to account for the excess headspace created when the chamber is reamed. I have a 280 Imp and a 35 Whelen Imp, plus a 6mm Rem AI which was originally a 243 Win, since the 243 is slightly small in dimensions than the 6mm Rem, it can fire the parent cartridge as well as the Ackley version, not so with the 25-06.  The 25-06 Improved should show a gain of about 8½% over the parent cartridge.

Why stop with the AI?  The .257 STW and the .257 Remington Ultra Mag will really warm the barrel. ::) ;D

And ruin the frame if not worse, why waste the barrel on it.  ::)

I am kind of thinking ther is a way to do it.  On the way to me now is a .270 barrel that someone hosed up the latch shelf on.  Plan is to re-cut the latch to the proper geometry and then just set back the barrel by turning off the breach to match the newly cut latch shelf.  At this point I will make a shim and silver it into the hinge and grind it to fit the frame.  I have a .270 reamer so I will just cut the chamber deeper by whatever amount I have to take off to fix the latch.  Could just as easy cut a proper AI chamber in the set back barrel.  Think it will work?  Larry

AI's / WILD CATS / RECHAMBERS?
« Reply #9 on: July 29, 2009, 09:59:23 PM »
Ok so my plan for a 25-06AI has put me back to thinking again. What AI's / wildcats / rechambers can be done on the H&R with out extensive modification? Is there a listing I havent found? This may sound like a dumb question but I am really interested in it. I do reload so that does not bother me.

That's a good question!  I'm kind of curious what barrels are good candidates for rechambers/rebores to other calibers without stubbing (if that makes sense).

For instance I asked about the 6.5x55 and quickdtoo gave me the contact info of a smith who could stub one OR rechamber and rebore and .204, .22H (IIRC) or .223 to 6.5x55.

I'd be curious as to what could be rechambered or rebored to .256 WinMag.

The Hornet or a rimfire barrel would be the only H&R factory barrels that could be used for a rechamber and rebore.
