Filling holes drilled in side of 336 SC receiver
« on: July 29, 2009, 03:03:29 PM »
I picked up and early 50's 336 SC in 35 Rem a few years back, and the previous owner had drilled and tapped it for a side mount for the scope. Any suggestions on how to fill the holes without screw ends sticking into the receiver?

If you have longer screws that fit the threaded holes, they can be shortened to filler screw length, with the outer end slotted for a fine screwdriver.

When I do something like that, I D/T a scrap 1/8" thick steel plate for the screw, thread it in so that another 1/8" sticks out the other side, then cut the old screwhead end off flush with the plate (file smooth).

Flip the plate over, slot the protruding end, cold blue it & install it.

If it's still too long, screw it back into the plate with one or two threads exposed on the far side of the plate and either file or grind off the excess.
The screw threads will be smoothed when it's unscrewed from the plate.

Thanks - I'm only about an hour and 1/2 from Williams, so I'll probably take the easy way out and go there.

Many vintage side-mount scope bases used screws that were somewhat larger then standard 6-48 scope mount screws, Lloyd.

Most likely so, to better absorb additional torque due to the weight of the scope being offset from the bore C/L.
