possible source for projo's.......
« on: July 29, 2009, 06:01:40 PM »
I do searches in various ways and sometimes I come across odd industrial equipment.......

has any one ever investigated grinding balls? they seem to come in various sizes and each size is consistent and held to close tolerance.

these might make good cannon fodder but with one caution they are hard so like ball bearings you need to be aware of hard surfaces down range

and the chance of bounce back.......the big factor would be what do they cost?

i bought mine from    Fox Industries inc. Fairfield NJ , tele 973 - 227 4440 .

they had perfect ones for my Dom cas parrot ....42.8mm IIRC .

if they dont have your size in inches ask about metrics they have some sizes inches but some in mm too .

50 polished steel milling balls $75 bucks . i'd hoped to be able to recover them ......not yet .

i'm taking about 20 to montana with me . then i'll have to order more .

they sell these balls in 'tiny' quantities as they are all overruns so it maybe hit or miss .

Yep got one of those also. The furnace I was intending to build is not built, but we should still be able melt some zinc.

My beer can mortar is strong enough to deal with lead shot.  But I have some zinc, too.

50 polished steel milling balls $75 bucks .

That sounds like a reasonable price if you consider the cost of lead/zinc, electricity/gas, mould and casting equipment.

I have all the stuff and enjoy the 'ritual' of casting, but for a guy starting out and just wanting hassle free balls to shoot, $1.50 a pop isn't too bad.

 Non-toxic too :)

at 1.50 per i hope i can get about 300 more b4 they go illegal for some darn reason ....

these things are as close to "Match" ammo as you can get

on second thought maybe ........150 of them ...i havent found anywhere that i can recover any ...

there is walking some odd thousand yards down range with a metal detector .....but i could die  ;D

'the ritual'  V3 ? ...zinc , electricity , gas ,   thats 3/5 .....i was under some impression the 'ritual' might have been stoking the coals , pumping bellows ....like that . might be 4/5 if that mold is anything but steel ....... :o .

i'd like to go cast , and i will .....as soon as mike and tracy offer to give me a deal on rifling my parrot . :D :D

i am a rookie and i do like 'hassel free balls to shoot' .......but ....i'm a very good rookie  :P and i will prove it in montana ...... ;) ....no really .... :D ....it's coming .......you got a match coming ....and it's coming today ...oh !!!!!....no contest ....well thats .....too bad for someone ????? :D

if i have to eat two boat loads of crow ...i dont care , ...much.....    as then i will beg DD to teach me and my parrot gun w/ sights  (...her name is 'Tart' as she bit me on our first date . ....not in a nice way either , Dom sent her with a bug up her nose ....;D )

how to shoot 6 inch groups at at some god awfull range as he has promised    win/win ....all aroud  8) ???

sorry i couldnt resist . ;D

 Gary,

I hope I didn't come across as implying that you're a rookie. I was trying to say that anyone who didn't want to go to the expense of casting might consider the reasonably priced steel balls you've found.
