How much to touring motorcycles weigh now?
« on: July 30, 2009, 05:27:36 AM »
When I was riding in the late 70s and early 80s my big bike weight about 450 pounds dry. A big bike, like the full dress Harley Electra Glide weighted 600 pounds.

My understanding is that some weigh quite a bit more than that today.

What does a touring motorcycle weigh today?

I believe the weight given on the registration for my Yamaha, Midnight Venture is 780 lbs.  When I got hit last week I was glad two men stopped and helped me get it back up on it's wheels.

What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

TIP; grab handel bars push forward lift and push when the front tire hits the pavement and it will come right up on it's wheels. at 150lbs i could get a full dress electraglide up with no problem.

It helps to bungee the front brake to keep it from rolling.
Used to demonstrate the pick up technikue on my 81 interstate when riders said they couldn't get one up. Would go outside and lay it on the ground then pick it up .
Still think some of them didn't believe it could be done after seeing it . Always amazed me how some grown men couldn't pick up a 350 or 450 cc bike.

I would put my back to the Gold Wing about in the center of the bike, then grab something solid with my hands & push with my legs.   I'm under 200# with a bad back & it worked for me.

Does anyone remember the scene from "Quigley Down Under" showing the aborigines lined up on the skyline as far as you could see?   That needs to be US!

Found out my 1500 aspencade weighs a lot Sat. I rode over to my brother in laws and decided to ride through his yard instead of the gravel drive. Soon as the rear wheel touched the soft ground it did a 180 and lay over on her side. Didn't really hurt the bike any , but killed my pride. Did break off my right hiway pboard . It needed to be moved anyway and the design is such that it will break away in a turn over / crash.
Just a reminder that these beasts are a lot like half tamed animals , Take a 98 horsepower bike and get the rear wheel spinning the least little bit and it will bite you qiick.

I had a Yamaha Venture (V-4) big cruiser but I don't know how much it really tipped the scales at. The bike I have now is also a Yamaha but the Royale Venture full dress touring bike. I am positive it is heavier than the older bike. It took two men to pick that big cruiser up if it went down flat on the pavement. It was heavy mercy sakes! I would guess that my newer touring bike weighs at least 750-lbs as it has lots of extra chrome on the bike and a few more tid bits too. ;D

Giturgun......I once did the same thing right after a rain shower! My bike was on my friends driveway but I got heamed in by his girls camaro when she came home from school that day. I could not back up as the boy friend later pulled up behind me and then the kids left the scene with some other friends. So when I wanted to leave, I turned the bike towards the lawn and rode off the pavement. There is a slight incline so I gave it the gas just a wee bit......Yeah right!!! The bike came around so quick on that wet grass and then I put my leg out to balance but I stepped into what was a hole dug previously by the dog. Needless to say the bike and I both went to the ground. Yes, my pride was tainted just a bit but no injury's and no dents in the bike. ::)  :-[  ;D
