Well we went to the egg shoot yesterday, and the wind was blowing  very hard and I got spanked by the big heavy calibers.  There were 3 or 4 22-250 varmint killers out there and we missed, not by much but if you miss by.25" may as well be a mile.  The fellows(2) that did hit were using BIG benchrest guns, one in 7mm Mag and one in 6 BR.  So here is my ?  The 7mm has a lot of recoil, but the b.c. of a .284 bullet is GREAT, I here y'all say try a .308, so what about a 7mm-08?  Would this be the best of both worlds or am I way, way off and just need to try to get a regular ol' 223, or 308 like suggested before.  Any way the Rem 22-250 I have still kills hogs out to  :sniper:  437yds. so far but looks like I may need to get a NEW TOY
(breaks my heart) to experiment with before the April 500yd egg shoot for $1000 one shot. What would you do? :?

A 300 Win. Mag. with the 200gr. HPBT-MK By Sierra might be the thing in high wind.
Of course,that load will kick the soda out of a biscuit.

How's bout a 6 millimeter of one flavor or another shooting a slippery, high BC VLD bullet?

It's what I shoot at 1000 and a 105 over 46 grains of powder won't beat you up anywhere near as bad as the mean old .30's. A check of the exterior ballistics will turn up some surprises!

Unless I'm wrong (again), it's what Bill Shehane uses too!

Egg shot? (i guess it is an "un-official" event)....but what is it?

How do you do it? How many eggs? how long etc.....

sebastion,I think they are shooting at eggs out to about 600 yards.  It is apparently an informal shooting match. Or as you said, unofficial.

Glad to hear that there are other egg shooters. We just finished an "unofficial" shooting match in East Texas. We have a trophy made up for the overall best score and a trophy of a horse's butt for the worst score. Usually have 4 or 5 different shooting ranges at various targets and the egg shot is for bonus points at the 100 yd distance. Sure is alot of fun and the kids can shoot as well. Side bets are accepted.

Sebastian,   There is a silhouette shoot down in Zwolle, Louisiana that I try to make every year.   Back when Bucky Murdock was still alive he had an egg shoot every year.  What he did was take some eggs and tape a string to them and hang them on the ram line rail so that they would swing in the breeze so to speak.   The ram line is 500 meters from the firing line.   He usually won the match since it was his land and he had a lot of practice with this trick.  But the winners were usually something like 7mmSTW.  Fast bullets with high BC.   I would think that something like the 6.5 TKS or the 6.5 BR with 107 SMK @ 2750 f/s would do a nice job since the wind drift on this bullet is small.   People who shoot this round at this velocity say that it is necessary to either increase the diameter of the firing pin tip or make the pin hole smaller in the bolt face because of pressure problems.  This is to keep the primer from flowing back and cratering around the firing pin.   The person who was the first to try this says that the 107s at this velocity will consistantely take down the rams and that wind drift is nominal.  For what it's worth......Don

A most peculiar competition indeed......kinda like shooting bottles with gas and potassium permanganate in them, only quieter, eh?

Finally someone is giving credit to the 6 BR-I never thought I'd see the day.

I have a .22-6mm improved (80 grain Sierras) and am planning on building some sort of 6mm that will handle the big, sleek bullets. I'm sold on the heavier bullets for wind resistance. I find it's a lot easier to hold over for range than it is to guess what the wind is doing over 2-3-4-5-6-700 yards.

Gotta love the recoil, too. I finally got sick of being macho and missing because of my flinch, especially when I didn't get much practice.
