30-06 Range Report
« on: July 30, 2009, 06:12:00 PM »
Went to the range this morning about 5 AM.  Could not sleep so decided to do something constructive.  No wind at all, totally calm, smoke was a bit of a problem, hard to breath.

Took my Caribou load for my 30-06 Handi, since Caribou season is in 11 days.  Using Sierria 165gr sighted in for 300 yards.  First five shot a 5 1/4" group.  Second group managed to shrink it to 4 5/8".  Third group got it down to 3 3/4", that's where I want to be.

Tomorrow morning I will use clay targets instead of paper and move on out to 400 yards.  The reason for clay targets, I cannot see bullet holes in paper with a spotting scope at that range or beyond.  The clay targets explode and I know if I hit it or not.

Shot a .338 Yesterday, did not get to the 30-06.

This morning again used the 30-06.  Hit seven out of ten 4" clay targets at 500 yards.  The three misses were close enough that the impact caused one to crack, one to flip over, and the last one to slide down the bank.  Still working for a ten for ten, and that is doable at 500 yards.  Just need practice, practice, practice.  My form got sloppy the last four months.  See that's what fishing rods and dip nets do.

With your Handi-Rifle 30-06 you are hitting 70%+ on clays at 500 yards?  What scope are you using, do you dial?  That is FANTASTIC shooting for most any gun!

I put an old 3x weaver with a post reticle on my 30-06 barrel a week or so ago.  I took it to the gun range yesterday and got it sighted in using Remington 150 grain PSPCL's.  even with the somewhat coarse sighting system I easily got 3 into 1 1/4 inches.  However I had one dud factory round.

OK I am shooting the Sierria 165gr boat tail.  With 61.5gr of Reloader 22, with WLR primer.  While I have not shot them through my croney, the book says I should be getting just over 2900fps.

I currently have a 3.5X10X50 Burris scope on the 06 with the Ballistic plex reticle.  With this load it is right on with the range finding marks on the scope.  I tweaked the load just a little to get them in together.

Just got back from the river bed.  High temps have the glaciers melting faster than usual, river is real high.  Everywhere that I usually use is under water.  Unable to get a good 500 yard shooting location.  So we worked on the 45-70s.  Got them both dead on at 200 yards.

The Tanana River is glacial fed, and is running high.  The Chena, and Salcha, are clear water rivers, (fed from springs and run off)  and they are almost dried up.
