Is 357 Handi Versitile ?
« on: July 31, 2009, 06:49:26 AM »
I say or at least think the 357mag Handi is the most versitile gun/caliber that H&R makes! What say you? Sure looks like there is something missing between the 38 Short Colt and the 38Spl. I have not maxed mine but can take a few K off the max case and shoot them. Pic is left to right 38 Short Colt,38 Special ,357 mag, 360 Dan Wesson and the 357 maxie. Kurt

When you have a gunsmith open that barrel out to a Max you'll have the Mack Daddy of versatility. IMHO. I'm about to do the same with my 357 mag Contender barrel.

I'm stuck in Nu Joisey 'til Tuesday without my Maxi.......I miss her, but she's safer at home.....they'd probably conficate her here :'(  I've never seen so many anti-gun people in all my life, including my own eastern family, and I grew up here.  I left Joisey as soon as I could at age 18.  I had a Midway flyer, a Sportsmans Guide Shooters catalog, and a North American Hunter with me when I got here and they all mysteriously disappeared within ten minutes.  Thank God I'll be home on Da U.P. with my Handis on Tuesday.

Yes, Kurt.  I do believe it is the most versatile Handi I own.

I think I would agree also. I have three of them two uncut and one max. I do believe the max is my favorite rifle period, And I have a lot to choose from.

BTW I like the max so much I bought two Ruger Blackhawk in that cal and I am considering changing the barrel on my CZ 527 and rechambrring it in the max. 8)

I combined some info from Chuck Hawks and came up with a list of what the 357 can do.

The .357 without reaming is no slouch. With the exception of grizzly,or large browns I'm not afraid of anything in North America when mines' along.Look at the ballistics from rifle length barrels with factory ammo. Read the tens of articles on Gunblast, Leverguns etc.The .357 as a close-range meat-buster is nothing to turn away from. Remember the .25-20, .32-20, .44-40, etc. How many critters fell to these rounds, and the .357 out of a rifle is very comparable if not better.Drop in a .38Sp and drop rabbits and squirrels on the ground all day.

If I could only keep one centerfire it would be my .357 maxi.

My culled down Handi's are the 45-70, and then I have a few others to keep it company...357 Mag/Max. .45 LC/.454 Casull Carbine, .243 Ultra, and 20 gauge Tracker II.
