Handy Handi
« on: August 01, 2009, 05:53:48 AM »
I've been thinking of making one of my Handis into a more versatile gun, one able to handle both shot and bullet.

I read a long time ago about someone who bored out the muzzle of a 45/70, about 3-4 inches , then used both 45/70 ammo and brass loaded as a shot cartridge. Supposedly the muzzle boring allowed time for the shot to quit spinning in the rifling and produce a decent pattern while the bullet just had a shorter barrel.

My other thought was to take one of the older 44mag barrels, which are somewhat oversize, chamber to 45 Mongo(Mungo), bore to remove all rifling to an inch or so of the muzzle. This is the way the old Paradox/Cape guns were bored. Then use the .444 brass to load shot or  a .452 lead bullet. This should produce at close-up shotgun and rifle.

Am interested in your thoughts, opinions, ideas or suggestions of either of these ideas.

 Thanks--woodsrunner

I have two barrels for my T/C contender set up for bullets or shot.  45/410  And a .44 Mag barrel.  Both barrels have a screw on adapter that stops the shot cup from spinning.

As for the idea of taking the rifling out of the last few inches in a 45-70 barrel, don't think it would make any difference.  Once the shot started spinning unless something is there to stop the spinning they would just continue to spin as they went out the end of the barrel.  The lack of rifling would allow them and the shot cup to continue to spin.

As for your second idea, don't know anything about it.  Never heard of one.  Rog

I have heard that some have shot .410's (36 ga.) in the old trapdoor 45-70's where the barrel was shot out.

Midway has all brass .410 shells.

me little brother (age wise) was here a while back had his 45-70 handi with him i asked to look at it an shoved in  a 2 1/2" 410 when he handed it to me, His eyes went wide with alarm as he knew what i was thinking. I Immediately stepped to the door before he could stop me and fired it across the field.
"I always heard you could do that." He smiled kinda weakly, but it was plain to see he didn't appreciate the .410 being fired out of his Handi. Most people don't realize nothing but the plastic wad is going to touch the metal..:-)

That Handy rifle you are looking for isnt made by H&R it was and is still made by Savage , its their model 24 predator rifle ( over and under shotgun/rifle combo gun)

I have wanted one of these for a long time , my other halves dad picked up the 223 ( over) 20ga ( under) and loves it , I have been working up a accurate 200 yard load for the 223.

  Hope this simpifies your desire,

I have been looking at 24's for a while. 2 issues. They cost a lot. And the rifle and shotgun cannot be tuned to hit to the same point of aim. The solution appears to be see through scope mounts so you use the scope for the rifle and irons for the shotgun. As far as price, I was looking a factory .357 Max/20 gauge in excellent shape. At the end of the GB auction, it would have been $600 transferred to me.

There are Russian copies going for a lot less, but their triggers are awful.

Default--I've had 24s, still have a 22/410. To me they are clumsy, poorly balanced and heavy. What I am looking or is something easier to carry and versatile. Something with a change of ammo I can use shot or bullet, may have to spend more time working with a .410. --woodsrunner

My daughter is married now but her Savage Model 24 in .22 LR over a 20 gauge is still at home in the gun locker. Last year it finally was joined by a family member, a Savage 24 .357 over a 20 gauge. it is a beauty and I am very happy to have it. It came from the original owner who traded it in for a 30/30 over a 12 gauge (IIRC). It has been responsible for many deer and much small game in Maine and I hope much more in the future....<><....:)

I suspect that a 20 gauge Tracker 1 wearing plastic would do it. My nicest carrying gun is a 22" Tamer with the buttstock changed out for adult size plastic. If it had rifle sights, it might be perfect.

if you want rifle sights on your Tamer they can be put on fairly easily with 2 part epoxy or "Black Max". Sights have been put on shotgun barrels several times by members here, myself included....<><....:)
