Destroyer Carbine 9mm Large
« on: August 01, 2009, 10:24:40 AM »
Hi,

Looking for info on the Spanish destroyer,  Does anyone have info where I can find blueprints for it.  I haven't seen one in a while.

In his book, "Bolt Action Rifles" by DeHass, he has info on the Destroyer, including, I think, barrel shank info.

It may be just a typo but the correct nomenclature for the caliber of the Destroyer is 9MM Largo ,not 9m Large. The ammunition is hard to find.

I goofed,   its 9mm Largo,

I just ordered the book "the Master Gunmaker's Guide to Building Bolt-Action Rifles"  ISBN 1581604203  .  Hopefully it will have some good info and plans.

What are you planning on doing with one?

I have an excellent condition 1961 model and it's cool and all, but most of the parts - including the receiver and bolt - on Destroyers I've examined are soft steel. Fit and finish is 'fair' at best. The quality isn't what you'd see in an Astra or Star pistol.

Some say these rifles are like "Mini-Mausers." They look the part, but that's about where the similarity ends IMO...

Hi Victor,

Actually I am planning on making a version of one.  I am left handed and all surplus rifles are made right handed.  Also I am thinking of a switch barrel to use different cartridges.  I need an original rifle to get dimensions and the positioning of the locking lugs.  I have all the tools for the project and will be using heat treated 4140.

Paul:  Hey - if you're gonna make one, make another one for me (no joke).  I think a mini-Mauser like that should have a switch barrel application.  I can see one in 7.62x25mm for a flat little varmit round and one in the current 9x23 Winchester, maybe 22 magnum, maybe 357 magnum.  Neat idea.

That would be a cool project. Be aware that some areas of the receiver (like the mag well) will need to be either broached or EDM'ed. I believe the originals were investment castings.

I made a 9 round "assault magazine" out of a 38 super Colt mag for mine  :)

The magazine well and trigger guard are a one piece casting.  I had/have one around (maybe, I think).  I purchased a second one just to have the parts should I ever need it.  Poor quality and there is variation in specs, or possibly a lot of rust.

HI Mikey,

Sorry I can only make one for me.   I will be working out directions and procedures so that you could make one for yourself.

Yes, I am considering the following 7.62x25, 9mm Luger, including 32-20 base catgs' like the 22 R2 Lovell  Anything with a similar case head.  The only problem will be magazines, unless I make it a single shot. I will be keeping pressure levels to around 40k psi max.

I have been thinking of this for a long while and am about ready to begin.

There were at least two very different versions of those. One was pretty much a miniature Mauser and one was more like a .22 with rear locking lugs. Back in the 70's I had a friend who got hold of one of the better ones. He was attending a gunsmith school at the time and I encouraged him to make a nice small game rifle of it. Instead, he built up a .308x1.5" on it! What an idiot! He had a very high pressure wildcat round nearly as large as the rifle bolt! And the idiot instructors of the school let him do it! The same idiot instructors who would NOT allow him to rebarrel a '99 savage .303 to .219 Zipper because it might be over pressure for the action, let him build an absolute death trap! I told him "don't even think of firing that thing, you've already destroyed the action, now just throw it away".
To build one, I'd suggest you find the magazine first, 7.62x25 would be the easiest in that regard.

I have an old Star pistol in 9mm Largo, and its a neat round, sort of like a 9mm Luger Plus P.  The round is seen on the market in military corr and non corr versions by the big surpluss dealers in the Shotgun News, as well as available in the Blazer aluminum case version.

Sarco has plenty of the 9mm largo ammo in stock.  They have star 9mm largo pistols
 too.

I have a star and a astra 400 in 9mm largo.

7.62x25 using CZ52 mags would be handy.
