Club liked my stages! Yee Haw!
« on: September 28, 2003, 11:09:49 AM »
Was asked a month ago to write the stages for Sept's shoot.  Got all six written but was worried that I had overlooked something or whatever.
Well, we shot them today and everyone liked them.  Total of 135 shots, pistols, rifle and shotgun, for the six and several pards liked the high number of rounds.
Yesterday we shot a "short course" of about 80 shots and got through at 12:15.  Today we were finished at 12:45 so I guess the actual shooting time is a small part of the total time it takes to run a stage/match.

A tip of the hat to folks that put out the effort to write a stage or all of them. It seems to fall on just a couple at each club and some I have shot at had some really creative stages. I myself have never written one. I do save my stage description from my handout at the bigger shoots I go to and I try to get them to a pard from a very small club, and he sees what others are using and takes it from there.
Stage writing comes under spirit of the game to me. It is something the other shooters don't think a lot about, but someone had to do it or we would all just show up for mumbly peg.

Yeah pards, but remember that writing stages is something of an art form in itself!

I wrote the "Cat Foo Young" stage a couple of years ago and it was very well received at matches in the midwest and I understand it has been used on the left coast at a match or three. But I really can't take credit for the whole thing because although I wrote the initial ideas for it, it took someone who knew what they were doing to flesh it out and get it properly put into stage instruction format! Not always easy to do and it takes some one with experiance shooting stages and an understanding of all the possible difficulties that can arise in interpretation of the descriptions.

My hat's off to those who have the talent!

Cheyenne Ranger,
A while back, I wrote this little article on stage design and writing. It's not the only way to do it but it's what works best for me. Have a look and see if it's something you can use.

Although I have not had the time to update my web site lately, there are a number of ready to uses stages there for anyone who wants to use them. Now that I am no longer working for a living, I expect to have time to add some new stages to the web site.... check back every now and then.

Like Howdy Doody says, the more folks step up and contribute a stage or two the easier it is for all of us. Whenever we enjoy shooting a stage, we should make a point of thanking the stage writer for the effort.
