Bullet weight retention on squirrels
« on: September 28, 2003, 11:23:43 AM »
I recovered my first bullet from a squirrel this weekend, shot her at 30 yds. with CCI short hollow-points, 29 gr., it was perfectly mushroomed/flattened on the opposite end of the squirrel, I shot her head on in the right shoulder, recovered off of the ham.  It was .40 caliber expansion and weighed 27 grs!  I was amazed at how well it held together, it took out the shoulder and went right down the spine.  I would like that performance from any big game bullet!

If I made that shot with my .22 mag the question would have been about squirrel weight retention.
I did recover one from a coon but it went through some bone and wasn't the picture of proper bullet expansion.

I've recovered one once from a medium sized coon, about 5-6 lb if I remember correctly. I was using CCI stinger LR's. I remember shooting it in the head and finding the recovered bullet perfectly expanded just under the hide of the hindquarters. When I was at the Sheriffs Dept, I kept a ruger 10-22 rifle and a MK I pistol in my car for dispatching car struck deer. I prefered the .22 over the .357, especially in the residential areas. Many a deer was put down at night with the .22 often in front of a home where the occupants where asleep without them ever being aware of the accident or what had taken place outside. I often carry the same MK I pistol while hunting. I used it once to dispatch a deer that was spine shot, I recovered the bullet when I skinned the deer. It was severly deformed and didn't hold up well as I don't suspect it was meant to.
Well, it seemed like a good idea at the time....ES
