does anyone make/sale .45/60 brass for the 1876?
« on: August 02, 2009, 06:29:05 AM »
  Hello again to all,

Recently I posted about the .30/30 and the 150 or 170 weight preferrances. As a side note my gun worked splendid with the 150's and a charge of 3031.

Everything was going to plan for the fall hunts with the .30/30 until I stopped by the Cabelas, and saw a win 1876 (Uberti) in .45/60.....

I haven't bought it yet because I wanted to see what I could find for loading components. I have molds and dies for the .45/70, and I suppose that I could cut down some .45/70 brass, but that looks like a hastle. A quick check on  Midway's site and a couple others hasn't yielded anything. If anyone has a Uberti 1876 or is loading for it The're likely posting here. Also what info I did find was some articles mentioning 'turning down' case rims to feed through the rifles, has that changed? if I do get the gun and trim .40/70 cases will I have to turn down rims too? are there any other 'tricks' to the gun that a potential buyer should be aware of?

   Thanks in advance, Rvtrav

Buffalo Arms lists Jamison and reformed 45-70 brass, whether they actually have the Jamison in stock is another matter tho.

Here's couple other possible sources, Jamison apparently sells direct...

I'm considering a Cimarron (Uberti) 1876 in .45-75...

Thanks for all the links quicktdoo,

After checking them out I guess that I just need to work on my "justification" for a purchase. It is good to have some dreams, especially ones within reach.

I did see Bertram .45/75 brass available at Midway-just the thing for Lurker. I didn't see one on the sales rack, but I am certain cabelas could get me a .45/75 in time for the fall hunts if I wanted one.

The .50/95 chambering would be cool, but I think a simpler shortened .45/70 would be more practical. How does the .45/75 stack up ballistically to the .45/60? it looks like a larger capacity bottlenecked case, but does it preform a lot more than the '60?

My old COTW shows the 45-75 shooting a 350gr bullet at 1380fps, the 45-60 with a 300gr bullet at 1450fps, not a whole lot of difference.

I save all my old worn 4570 brass when a batch starts to split and my buddy who has one then cuts it down and uses it in his gun.

  Thanks again guys,

I was kinda hoping that you'd talk me out of a $1200 (or so) dollar gun, $200 dollar brass purchase, an afternoon casting and sizing some bullets, developing loads, and sighting the whole thing in in time to go hunting....

ohh... what the heck ya only live once!

Now I wonder if the rifle will still be sittin' on the rack, it'll be a few days before I get a chance to buy it.

Is there any smokeless load information out there for this gun and cartridge combo? (1876 replica in .45/60 WCF)

And most importantly, will my .30/30 ever forgive me for tossing it to the wayside? (at least for the first hunting seasons)

You might want to shop around for your 1876. $1200 is pricey...I found one on Gunbroker (link:  http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.asp?Item=136012764 ) for $786 (not mine, and no affiliation to it or the seller). That $400+ would buy an awful lot of ammo and reloading components! Good luck with your purchase!

  Thanks Toroflow,

The savings would easily pay for all the setup and components, I think I'd better shop around before I buy the one I saw, $400 is a big difference!

Is the usual procedure for Gunbroker is to have an FFL dealer purchase the gun, for a fee, or is it typically FFL dealer to FFL dealers only?

rvtrav, you register on Gunbroker and buy the gun yourself, then arrange for the FFL seller to send it to the FFL dealer that you have pre-selected in your area. The keyword is "pre-selected", have the FFL all set up and ready to receive your new rifle from the seller. My FFL dealer charges me $20 per gun I have shipped in and run thru his FFL books.  It's real easy once you get set up with your FFL and on Gunbroker. Then watch out! Lurking on Gunbroker looking for deals is habit forming, and will cost you lots of $$! ;)
