Soft parts in TLA's?
« on: August 02, 2009, 12:36:01 PM »
I have heard that some TLA revolvers have parts that were not properly heat treated. This makes me hesitate to shoot any of my TLA's.  Is it possible to tell from the serial numbers which are ok to shoot?  If not, how can I get my guns checked and re-heat-treated if necessary?  Thanks.

Had a #5 with a soft hammer/trigger.  You could tell by taking it to full cock, then pushing on the back of the hammer without pressing the trigger.  The sear would slip.   I sent it to Dave Clements and he properly hardened them and re-cut the sear.  Never had another problem with it.

About 30% of guns in my survey had soft internals.  However, that may be low, as many TLA owners have never shot their guns or haven't shot them enough for bad parts to show themselves.  One of my #5s had soft internals.  Three of them I haven't had checked.  The fifth was checked and was okay.

Any good gunsmith can check them and fix them, if necessary.  By good, I mean someone like Dave Clements, Alan Harton, Bowen, etc.
