« on: August 02, 2009, 03:42:51 PM »
Saw a handirifle in 3030 with a no name scope for $359 today in the used rack. They must be kidding.

I didn't pay much more than that for my new SS 45-70 Ultra Hunter, Cabela's is real proud of that Handi, aren't they!!  ::)

yes, Ive found that for the most part Cabelas and Gandermountain are  good places to shop, not necessarily a good place to buy!

Yeah gander is quite the joke as far as their pricing goes with me and mine , But i can go there a size a rifle up to my missus or get a feel and look at the newest this or that think i have only bought a CZ pistol from them that they had on sale and that little rossi 7.62x39 single shot for my neices that didnt work out , ocassionally i will pick up a pound of powder ( has to be in short supply at the time) maybe a box or two of projectiles if they are running their $10 off special..

Granted they do have a few 357 mag SB2 extractor synthetics for $250 and change , couple 44 mags set up the same as the 357s

But more or less its like Oldshooter said , good place to look but buying is another story.

There's a Gander Mtn. here.
Used to be good, lots of used guns at reasonable prices, and nice salespeople.
Something went wrong. Now it's hardly any used guns, and real high prices for everything. Rude, 'don't care' staff.
Maybe other places they are OK still, but not here!
Gander Mountain, if you are listening - 'here' is Houston, Texas, hiway 290.

Everything that has been said about GM here is true but for some reason and it ain't very often but you go in there and boom they got something special for a very low price that makes you have to go back now and then just to look. I paid $200 out the door for my like new BC 45Colt go figure also bought a brand new 4yr old on the shelf 7.62x39 for I think was Less than $225 after I tore it apart with minor handling marks from the store transfer. But $359 you should of waited for a sales person and tried to find out what was so special about that gun. Hell it might of been owned by someone famous like Quickdtoo ;) Kurt

I was at GM on Sat and noticed the same thing, except for a nice little Rem 700 in 308 with a 20" barrel and synthetic stock with remington limbsaver pad for $350.  Fit me real nice, but already have a .308.  Might have to buy that one and sell my handi in 308 :o!
Last time I was at cabelas, their used guns were going for more than the same gun new, asked the salesguy and he looked all confused and walked away to ask somebody.  He never returned...

Cabelas and GM around here, and yes every now and then you need to check them out. Most of the people there are not very gun savvy, including those in charge, as I had a friend buy a 2nd generation Colt SAA at a extremeley great price, they thought it was a 3rd. Powder was, as I havn't bought it there in the last few years, was always about $2 more a lb. In fact everything is more. But again, with the prices they charge sooner or later they got to unload the stuff, and if your there it can be a good thing.
A story, Last dec I was shopping at cabelas and found a 24" barreled 94 trails end, at a good price. Looked at a lot of overpriced and in bad shape 94's until I spyed this one, so I bought it. 2 weeks later I was passin' thru so I stopped. Had a "gun show" goin on. All those old 94's were in the gun show, WITH HIGHER PRICES!!!! Unbeievable, or was it? CRASH87

You really have to keep an eye on the big name places.  Like was mentioned, they often have employees who know nothing about guns so stupid mistakes can go unnoticed.  I remember being at a Cabelas once and seeing a barely used ruger 1 in 338 marked $200.  I asked the guy on duty and he said it was some cheapie single shot and probably wasn't worth it.  He then directed me to some used bolt guns.  I wanted that gun so badly I could have exploded.  Problem was I was on vacation and needed the $200 in my pocket to buy gas for the return trip.  That was before I started carrying plastic so I was stuck.  Some guy probably got one hell of a deal on that gun!    I actually did get a mispriced gun once.  Dicks had a savage bolt .22 marked with the wrong tag so they sold it to me for the price of a chipmunk .22!  If it wasn't for all the problems I have had with them in the past I wouldn't have forced them to sell me the gun at that price...but they have really been bad to me.  I felt they deserved it!

You mean your GM has powder and primers? Haven't seen those in the store in Little Rock for over a year.

I think it's the car sales mentality. Price the trade-ins so high that a new model seems like a no-brainer. Also establishes a false re-sale value.

gander mountain here in upstate NY  wanted $299 for a bare 30-30 NEF 2 years ago..

i went to herb phillipsons  got the same gun NEW with a 3x9x40 barska scope and sling for $301 TOTAL..

GAND.MNT is a joke around here.. the staff (with exception of one guy) had no clue what they are doing..but they have that " i wear a vest so im a pro " attitude..

when they first moved into town i was thrilled.. finally a competative hunting store..( we only have wal-mart k-mart and herb's ) boy was i wrong.. they made the other stores look like they were selling items at reduced prices..

case in Point..   same box of nitro 3.5 turkey loads this past spring....
GM PRICE.. $14.99
WAL-MART PRICE...$6.99

like others said.. like to look ... "they do have the best selection" ... but hate to buy...lol
I'm not laughing at you I'm laughing with you,
                             Your just not laughing.......

Ever notice the deer we get is always smaller
                              than the deer we saw..??.lol

You need to go down to Fort Thompsons' in north Little Rock OSOK ... They had all primers and a limited selection of powder , And Gander just across the highway has powder in they're powder closet ..

Glad to see another Arkansan on here ;)

Or you could go to Don's and pay Gander prices and be told why you are getting a deal.
